Labor Day

Seems like just yesterday we were anxiously awaiting the unofficial beginning of the 2022 beach season as Memorial Day loomed large on the calendar and now, in what seems to be a blink of the eye, the unofficial end of our summer season is upon us as we get ready to celebrate Labor Day. In between these two holidays Rehoboth Beach has played host to thousands of visitors having once again made the trek from cities and towns across the United States and beyond to bask in the sun on our glorious beaches and spend quality time with family and friends wiling away the days strolling the board walk, playing games, riding rides and eating plenty of French fries, ice cream, pizza and more while enjoying entertainment at the band stand and elsewhere across town. Rehoboth in Bloom has been busy all summer tirelessly caring for the myriad of planters proudly displaying a rainbow of colors for all to enjoy. The holiday celebrates the many contributions workers have made to America's strength, prosperity, and well-being; Rehoboth provides a place for them to enjoy the fruits of their labor. While you are out and about celebrating this month, Rehoboth Beach Main Street would like to showcase some businesses in town we think you will like. They are sure to bring a sense of joy and contentment to all who partake of their services or products.

A truly unique decor will greet you as you enter Freddie's, an LGBTQ+, straight-friendly restaurant and bar. Enjoy happy hour with discounted beverages and special menus between 4-7 pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The hours are adjusted when special events happen. Be sure to check out the Barbie Doll collection while there.

Another great place to dine is Arena's, a locally owned and operated fixture in downtown Rehoboth Beach since 1990, serving the same great high-quality food with large portions. Arena’s offers casual family-friendly dining and catering, as well as live in-house entertainment.

An award-winning women’s clothing store you’ll want to visit is Cashmere Gardens. This beautiful store features styles from established and emerging brands and is keen on artistic collaborations.

Freddie’s Beach Bar and Restaurant

On a sweltering hot early August morning, one of my neighbors texted that one of her friends had canceled at the last minute to enjoy local legend Pamala Stanley performing at Freddie’s Beach Bar and Restaurant. I immediately jumped at the chance, knowing I was in for an extremely enjoyable evening!

When we got to Freddies we sat at the bar, where we had a perfect view of the area where Pamala was to perform. Our party looked around the room and marveled at all the Barbie dolls on display on the shelves in the room. The decor was casual and comfy, and we immediately relaxed and cooled off from the intense summer heat.  Read More

This column highlights the work of the RBMS Executive Director, Dan Slagle, the RBMS Board, and the five committees, focusing on the behind-the-scenes work of the staff and volunteers, as well as the activities that are planned and carried out.

RBMS bid farewell to our summer intern, Alex Whitford, with a luncheon held in Grove Park on August 11. (See story on Alex in the July 2022 issue of the RBMS Newsletter.) In attendance were several RBMS board members and volunteers, Executive Director Dan Slagle, and Alex’ Dads. We are thankful for the excellent work provided by Alex during the 2022 Summer and wish him the best in his future endeavors. Alex returns to school in Farmville, Virginia, where he will be a senior in the School of Business at Longwood University.

An Appreciation

Happy Anniversary, Dan!

August 26^th marked Dan Slagle’s 3^rd anniversary as Rehoboth Beach Main Street’s Executive Director and only full-time employee! We are so grateful to have Dan steering our ship. His hard work has resulted in the amazing growth of RBMS over the last 3 years, both in membership and the services we provide to our members and the community. Dan grew up in Cecil County, Maryland and, seeking a fresh start, came to Rehoboth Beach in 1998 to open the Hidden Treasure B&B. Dan started with RBMS as a volunteer on the Promotions Committee while he was still the manager at the Spice and Tea Exchange on Rehoboth Avenue. Dan says he was excited about RBMS’ mission and was delighted to pitch in as a volunteer. But then, Dan was encouraged to apply for the opening as RBMS Executive Director. An award ceremony was held on August 28 at the Bellmoor Inn and Spa in the courtyard. When History and Tech Combine: Experience Rehoboth Beach in a New Way this Fall!

There’s a new way for visitors and locals alike to discover, or rediscover, the history of Rehoboth Beach.

Rehoboth Beach Main Street (RBMS) has partnered with Built Story to launch a new app-based self-guided tour that lets visitors explore downtown Rehoboth Beach at their own pace, either in-person or remotely. The Rehoboth Then and Now tour will guide visitors to 15 stops throughout the downtown commercial area. Tour takers will learn about the 19^th Century religious summer camp, how fires and storms shaped the community, the transformative impact of the railroad, and the illustrious citizens who made Rehoboth what it is today. RBMS Fall Fashion Festival

Mark your calendars! The RBMS First Annual Fall Fashion Festival, “On the Avenue,” will take place on Sunday, November 13, at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center. This festive event will provide the opportunity to see the fabulous fashions available from Rehoboth Beach’s fine retailers! Individual tickets are $75.00 for the catered luncheon, prepared by The Pines, and the runway fashion show. Sponsorships are still available by contacting Robyn Rosenfeld Aburrow 301-807-2304.

AIDS Delaware and the Delaware HIV Consortium will jointly present AIDS Walk Delaware, an in-person event with walkers stepping off on September 17 at Grove Park as well as the Brandywine Park in Wilmington. This year's theme is Step Up, Step Out: Remove Stigma, Eliminate HIV, Improve Lives. Mid-Atlantic Volleyball is hosting a two-day tournament for men's, women's, juniors, and coed teams. Play will take place on the beach from Wilmington Avenue to Prospect Street.
