Summer time and the livin is easy!

Dear Friends and Members,

With summer upon us and the hurricane season on the way, it's a time of anticipation and reflection in our beautiful region. As we prepare for the changing weather, we are reminded of the powerful forces of nature that have shaped our coastline and history. Hurricanes, while often feared, have played a significant role in the story of the Treasure Coast.

The infamous hurricane of 1715 was responsible for sinking a fleet of Spanish Galleons with one French ship near Sebastian. Laden with treasures bound for Spain, these vessels were claimed by the sea, their riches scattered along our shores. It is from these sunken treasures that our region, the Treasure Coast, gets its evocative name.

Embark on a scenic drive along the Indian River Lagoon National Scenic Byway, where the road unfolds like a ribbon of adventure, offering glimpses of pristine coastline, lush spoil islands, and sparkling waterways. Enjoy, the unspoiled sands of Sebastian Inlet State Park provide the perfect backdrop for sunbathing, beachcombing, and swimming. The park is a haven for surfers, with its consistent waves drawing enthusiasts from all over.

The Indian River Lagoon, known as one of the most biodiverse estuaries in North America, teems with a variety of fish species. Anglers can enjoy both freshwater and saltwater fishing, with opportunities to catch snook, redfish, and tarpon.

As the sun sets over the horizon, take in the awe-inspiring beauty of the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean from one of the many bars and restaurants. Whether you're out on the water or strolling along the scenic shoreline, there are countless ways to soak in the evening's tranquility and charm.

This summer, as we appreciate the present and prepare for the future, let's also celebrate the rich history that has shaped our beloved Treasure Coast.

Gratefully yours,

Nicholas Sanzone

TOURISM PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

Mel Fisher Treasure Museum

"The living legacy of family is a treasure shared"

In Sebastian Florida along US1you will find a museum unlike many others. A family owned and operated testament to the charismatic character and leader, King of the Conch republic, Mr. Mel Fisher. Hurricanes are a force of nature that has shaped our state and shaped our culture in Florida. This is especially true along the treasure coast where teams of skilled divers and archaeologists work together to continue the work and legacy of Mel Fisher, a world-renowned pioneer in treasure hunting.

The story begins with a California man following his passions for diving and opened the first commercial dive shop where he also created one of the first underwater camera housings. Then in 1963 Mel continued to follow his dreams and left California for Florida where his passions lead him to hunt for the treasures of the sunken 1715 fleet, where he became one of the first recorded treasure hunters. After successfully salvaging the 1715 fleet, Mel spent the next 16 years researching and following the trail of the historic Atocha, a ship that was carrying millions worth of treasure sunken in Key West Florida. The treasures were plundered from the Americas and did not reach their European destination, hurricanes along our coast sunk these and many other vessels of that time.

In 1982 they founded the Mel Fisher maritime Heritage Society in Key West and shortly after that, in 1992 they opened The Mel Fisher Treasure Museum in Sebastian. Today the Mel Fisher Treasure Museum is run by Nichole Fisher, granddaughter of Mr. Fisher and Director of Operations, celebrating her 20th year with the family business. Recently they are looking forward to a few future events in the community.

One of these events is the unveiling of upgrades to the museum including the new touch screen treasure experience, the next is the summer camp starting July 8th and the other is the Mel Fisher Days, a celebration where you can participate and bid on actual treasure, where a portion of the proceeds of the event go the Michael Abt Jr. Have a Heart Foundation. Today the foundation has provided over 100 AED devices in Indian River County, and due to their efforts, all city properties have AED devices, including the one at the Chamber Offices.

The Mel Fisher legacy spans generations, with each family member finding out their own way to contribute to the saga. The Mel Fisher Treasure Museum is a place to inspire your imagination, learn about our history and find that there is treasure everywhere, but the best treasure is where the heart is.

CONCERTS IN THE PARK 2024

Concerts in the Park at Riverview Park Review

The recently concluded Concerts in the Park series has been a musical journey that brought our community together for nine unforgettable evenings. The series culminated in a spectacular celebration of the City of Sebastian's 100th anniversary at our June 7th concert, marking a significant milestone in our city's history.

Throughout the year the bands played our favorite tunes had the crowds dancing, both in their seats and on their feet, creating a vibrant atmosphere that was enjoyed by the thousands of attendees. The grand finale of the series took place on June 7th, featuring Tom Maclear and Renele, who filled the park with the sounds of Southern California and Country Rock. A unique feature of these concerts is the free raffle ticket each attendee receives, giving them a chance to win fantastic prizes donated by our local Chamber Members. On average each of the concerts had ~13 raffle baskets, brimming with prizes, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event.

The Concerts in the Park series is a collaborative effort between the City of Sebastian, the Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce, and our generous business sponsors. This partnership not only brings live musical talent to our community but also promotes our members and sponsor businesses with flair and style. All concerts take place at the picturesque Riverview Park, nestled along the Indian River Lagoon, starting at 5:30pm. These events have become a beloved tradition, drawing locals and visitors alike to enjoy great music in a beautiful setting.

As we reflect on this year's series, we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended, performed, and supported these events. Your participation helps make these concerts a resounding success. FINALLY FRIDAY REVIEW

Finally Friday Review

The Finally Friday events held on Cleveland Street this year have been a tremendous success, bringing together the community for three unforgettable evenings filled with fun, food, and music. Organized by the Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce and in partnership City of Sebastian, these events showcased the vibrant spirit of our community and the talents of our local businesses.

At each of the events we hosted ~30 vendors who contributed to the lively atmosphere with their diverse offerings. Each event featured live music, delicious food, unique crafts, and more, transforming Cleveland Street into a bustling hub of activity and enjoyment.

Finally Friday was created to provide our community and businesses with an opportunity to connect, share their talents, and celebrate the beautiful area we call home. We are thrilled with the response and look forward to working with the city to review the Finally Friday events and determine if they will continue in the future. Bringing people together and highlighting all that makes Sebastian a wonderful place to live and work.
