Special Event for Cornell Retirees | |
Sagan Planet Walk for Cornell Retirees

Join Zoe Learner Ponterio, Manager, Cornell Spacecraft Planetary Image Facility, and fellow retirees to explore the Sciencenter's Sagan Planet Walk in Ithaca.
We will take an approximately .75 mile trip from the Pluto station at the Sciencenter and end at the Sun station in Ithaca Commons, then return back to the Sciencenter. Each stop along the way features a planet model and informative plaque, and Zoe will share interesting facts about each planet.
Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. Park at the Sciencenter. Find more information about the walk here. Rain date is Friday, August 2, 2024, at 10:00 AM.
Optional: Get a “Passport to the Solar System” for $4 each to enjoy fun facts and discussion prompts as you explore the 1,200-meter walk. Stop at planet stations, get your passport stamped with unique Greek symbols, and bring it to the Sciencenter for a free admission! Alternatively, you can download the free version of “Passport to the Solar System." Please note that the downloadable passports do not qualify for free admission to the Sciencenter.

Join guides from the Botanic Gardens and the Lab of Ornithology for combined bird walk and plant walks this summer. This month we’ll tour the F.R. Newman Arboretum in search of summer birds, and enjoy the trees and other plants we find along the way.
Fee: $12 general admission, or FREE for Members of either the Lab or Botanic Gardens, Space is limited and pre-registration is required.
Walk will meet by the Sculpture Garden in the central part of the Arboretum.

Paa Kow and Cornell Summer Concerts & Lectures

Dubbed "Ghana's most artistic drummer" (Modern Ghana), Ghana-born drummer and composer, Paa Kow, (pronounced Pah-Ko) blends rhythm and artistry from his home with jazz and African roots creating his own Afro-Fusion sound. Touring internationally with his custom Ghanaian drum set and his Afro-Fusion Orchestra, Paa Kow brings concert goers an extraordinary musical experience filled with deep grooves and incredible beats. Paa Kow has shared stages with many African and American luminaries including Kojo Antwi, Amakye Dede, and Victor Wooten.
As another way to kick off the summer, enjoy free ice cream from Cornell Dairy for the first 400 guests starting at 6:30 PM. Free parking on campus after 5:00 PM.
Check out Cornell University's School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions' fantastic lineup of summer concerts and lectures—always free and open to the public. Performances include Latin jazz, rock, and reggae, plus engaging lectures from Cornell deans and faculty.

Join this walking tour of historic Stewart Park hosted by Friends of Stewart Park, Wharton Studio Museum & Historic Ithaca. The tour will focus on the park's history and its current revitalization. This tour will be walking throughout the park please be sure to wear proper footwear and bring a water bottle.
The event is free, but registration is required. Donations are always welcome!

Fall Creek Garden Tour
Residents of Ithaca's Fall Creek neighborhood will spruce up their gardens for display for this year's Fall Creek Garden Tour on Sunday, July 14th from 11:00 AM to about 3:00 PM.
The Fall Creek Garden Club presents this free, self-guided annual tour to highlight a variety of urban gardens and gardeners. On the tour, visitors will see well-tended front yards and the hidden delights of private backyards. Garden hosts are present to answer questions.
Visitors begin the tour, any time after 11:00 AM, by going to Thompson Park at the corner of Cayuga St. and Cascadilla Creek to pick up a map with garden locations and descriptions.
While at the park, there will be an opportunity buy raffle tickets for prizes (drawing at 2:30 PM) donated by local garden centers. The Garden Club will also be selling colorful T-shirts featuring its woodcut logo.

Whether a first-time guest or frequent visitor to Cornell Botanic Gardens, join this tour to discover some less commonly visited paths, plants and garden views. Be charmed by dwarf trees and plants from far-away lands, puzzle over a grafted oddity, wander down an off-the-beaten-buzzing track of pollinator plants and insects, and get cozy with trees that sometimes have knees or cones with lips!
Expect to walk for 90 minutes on a loop that includes steps, slopes and slightly uneven natural pathways. Experience the Botanic Gardens in a new way and explore some unusual plants and locales -- hiding in plain sight! Pre-registration required as space is limited.

Cornell Wellness Summer Group Exercise Classes
This summer will see some returning favorites as well as a few exciting new additions to the Wellness group exercise class line-up. Whether you are looking to focus on flexibility, cardio, balance, or strength, there is a class for you! Plus, classes are offered in-person and virtually.
The full listing of classes, plus their respective registration links, are available on the Wellness website. Please note that a Wellness Recreation Membership is required to participate. Classes run through August 2nd.

The Choose You Tuesdays Health Series
This series is held weekly from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Ithaca Community Gardens pavilion through September 24.
Join the group for yoga, dance workouts, and walks with local health organizations. Build biking skills for road and trail riding, taste garden-fresh recipes, and learn how to grow your own food. It's the perfect way to wind down after a busy day and meet others who live, work, and garden locally.
Choose You Tuesdays is a collaboration between Bikewalk Tompkins, CCE Tompkins County, Yoga Farm Ithaca, Ithaca Community Gardens, the YMCA of Ithaca and Tompkins County, Cayuga Health, and Tompkins County Whole Health.

Tree Phenology Walks at Cayuga Nature Center
Join this weekly citizen science walk every Monday to observe and collect data on seasonal changes in trees.
Rain or shine, monitor when buds break, leaves emerge, flowers bloom, fruits ripen, and when leaves change color and fall. The data is sent to the USA National Phenology Network, which makes it available to researchers who are trying to understand the mechanisms behind seasonal changes and how they are influenced by a changing climate. Learn how to make these types of observations, and how to do this at home or in your neighborhood.
This event is free and everyone is welcome to attend. Meet in front of the Cayuga Nature Center lodge at the beginning of the program. Walks occur weekly on Monday afternoons, 3-4 pm until Oct. 28, 2024.

Summer Lecture Series: “Can We Reverse Type 2 Diabetes, One of the Greatest Global Health Challenges?”

Join this free public lecture presented by Dr. Shahrad Taheri, Professor of Medicine, Weill Cornell.
Diabetes is increasing in prevalence worldwide affecting 537 million adults worldwide (nearly 40 million in USA) with devastating consequences for longevity and quality of life for affected individuals and their families. The majority of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes which is commonly believed to be a progressive irreversible disease.
However, Dr. Taheri and his team have shown that an intensive lifestyle intervention can result in over 60 percent of people putting their type 2 diabetes remission without medication. Taheri will present his work and show how lifestyle changes and modern ideas can help us look at type 2 diabetes differently and provide better potential outcomes for affected individuals.

Ithaca Warm Line Volunteers Needed
Suicide Prevention & Crisis Service hosts the Ithaca Warm Line and they have upcoming training with spots available!
The Ithaca Warm Line is a space for social connections and casual conversations for those who are feeling lonely and want someone to chat with. Ever popular, the Ithaca Warm Line receives over 1,500 calls per month! We need more volunteers to connect with individuals of all ages. This is a great preventative service supporting someone not getting into a crisis situation.
