LIFE, JUSTICE & PEACE SPOTLIGHT

October is Respect Life Month
Every October, the Catholic Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month. The first Sunday of October is observed as Respect Life Sunday. As Catholics, we are called to cherish, defend, and protect those who are most vulnerable, from the beginning to the end of their lives and at every point in between.
During this month of October, the Church asks us to prayerfully reflect on the dignity of every human person. We contemplate more deeply why every human life is valuable and we consider how we build a culture that protects life from conception to natural death.
Respect for life means we cherish and protect the baby in the womb, we support the mother facing an unexpected or crisis pregnancy, we treat with dignity the person faced with physical or mental challenges, we comfort and assist the elderly man or woman, we recognize the dignity of the person who is unsheltered.
When a woman becomes pregnant, and her boyfriend threatens to leave if she continues the pregnancy, we lovingly walk with her. When family members or friends become seriously ill, we assure them that God still offers them something in this life, and they still have purpose. When someone is facing great trials, we need to meet them where they are, walk with them on their journey, intercede for them, and be open to sharing Christ's love however He directs.
Here are some ways we might participate in Respect Life month:
Support the Pregnancy Help Center of San Gabriel Valley. Donate baby items and diapers to the Crib Project/Diaper Drive. The crib will be in the vestibule of the church through the month of October.
Pray and fast with 40 Days for Life for the protection of innocent life in the womb and an end to abortion. Join with others from St. Luke and neighboring parishes to peacefully pray in the public right-of-way outside Planned Parenthood El Monte, at 4786 N. Peck Road, El Monte (corner of Peck and Lower Azusa) between the hours of 7:00 am and 7:00 pm, now through Nov. 6. To volunteer, sign up at www.40daysforlife.com/local-campaigns/el-monte/, or contact our area’s 40 Days for Life coordinator, Glendy, at (626) 756-6934.
Pray a daily Rosary for life this October and intercede for the needs of others. Invite your family and your friends to tune in every evening to Relevant Radio’s Family Rosary Across America at 5:00 pm on the radio on 930 AM, on the free Relevant Radio app, or at RelevantRadio.com. People who pray together have the potential to change the course of history!
Continue or start a Novena to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary to Defeat Proposition 1, from Sept. 29 to Oct. 7,the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. It’s not too late to sign up at https://cacatholic.org/novena.
When watching the news and reading the headlines, we might feel helpless seeing the heartbreaking lack of respect for human life. Our charge is to respond to God’s call to treat every human life with dignity and respect. We must bring God’s love to His people. With God’s grace, we can change this secular culture of death into a culture of LIFE!
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us!
St. Joseph, Defender of Life, pray for us!
