New SBTDC Team Member - Ramya Vijapurapu


In September, the SBTDC's Technology Commercialization Team welcomed our newest member, Ramya Vijapurapu who will be based at the SBTDC's NC State Regional Center. 


Ramya is a recent graduate of NC State's Master of Microbial Biotechnology (MMB) program. The curriculum offers a mix of both PhD level science and technical courses as well as MBA and technology commercialization exposure. Post graduation Ramya consulted with several small, innovation driven companies in the RTP area on business development initiatives.

One NC Small Business Program Update


The One North Carolina Small Business Program was allocated $2M from the state legislature for Fiscal Year 2023, which started on July 1. The program consists of Incentive grants and Matching grants. Incentive grants provide funds to partially reimburse expenses incurred in preparing and submitting a Phase 1 proposal. Matching grants provide funds to match, up to a certain dollar amount, funds that are received via a Phase 1 award.

Guidance on New NIH Data Sharing Policy


The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently announced the rollout of a new Data Management and Sharing Policy which requires all proposals (including SBIR/STTR) submitted to NIH after January 25, 2023, to include a data management and sharing (DMS) plan. The requirement applies to all scientific data that is generated by research funded (or conducted) in whole (or part) by the NIH and will require awardees to have a data management plan in place for sharing the results of their research.

Think Multi-Product / Multi-SBIR Submission Strategy


Will your innovation driven small business be a one trick pony? While there are many successful singular product companies, this is a risk prone business strategy. Given that the risks associated with product commercialization are high, if your one product fails, this could lead to failure of your entire business. A potentially more productive, sound business strategy, is to consider the development of a technology platform.

SBIR Reauthorization


Reauthorization of the SBIR program, which was set to expire on 9/30, is making headway on Capitol Hill. On 9/20 the US Senate unanimously passed a draft bill that would extend the program for three years. The bill was sent to the US House and is awaiting a vote.
