Welcome to February!
Hi neighbor,

2023 has started off great! My Council colleagues and I welcomed the 2023 U.S. Figure Skating Championships to San Jose. If you missed these Championships, make sure to check out the U.S. Gymnastics Championships when they come to our city this August.
This January was also about new beginnings. I got to welcome Encanto Beauty, a new eyebrow salon, to Downtown Willow Glen. It is always a pleasure seeing small businesses choose Lincoln Avenue as their home. If you need your eyebrows laminated or shaped, visit Encanto!
This month, please join my virtual Office Hours on Wednesday, February 8th. Together, we can find solutions to your questions and concerns. I always love hearing from District 6 residents, so make sure to also RSVP to my virtual State of the District Address happening on Thursday, March 23rd.

In this newsletter, you will find many fun, upcoming events that support our local, small businesses and libraries.

Please stay warm this winter.

Best,

Please join me for this month's Office Hours on Wednesday, February 8th on Zoom from 5:30PM-6:30PM.

I am eager to answer questions and find solutions with you.

Council Committee Updates

I have been appointed to a few new Council Committees this year.

As always, I will give my undivided attention to each Committee to make San Jose safer and cleaner.
Restoring Our Tree Canopy

January’s storms caused a lot of downed trees in our community. However, even before the storms, our city was seeing a continuous reduction in our tree canopy. My colleagues and I took action to revive tree removal and replacement processes that will make it easier for residents and businesses to replace trees. If you'd like to learn more, please see the memo that I co-authored with Councilmembers David Cohen and Sergio Jimenez.
Welcoming New Council Colleagues

After a vigorous vetting process, my colleagues and I appointed new Councilmembers to the vacant seats left in Districts 8 and 10. Councilmembers Domingo Candelas (D8) and Arjun Batra (D10) bring a wealth of experience to the City Council and I greatly look forward to working with them to help address our communities most pressing needs.
2023 State of District 6

We will be reflecting on accomplishments we had in 2022, hearing from City official guest speakers, and discussing what we want to achieve this year.

Events You'll Love this February
February is
American Heart Month

Heart disease is the number one killer in our nation. I am partnering with the American Heart Association to proclaim February as American Heart Month.

Our goal is to raise awareness of cardiovascular diseases and educate San Jose residents about how they can be heart-healthy.

An important tip is healthy eating habits. I am an advocate for making San Jose a certified Blue Zone - a longevity hotspot where people thrive into their 100s. The residents of Blue Zones have a tasty, plant-based diet. View tons of recipes that will help you feel better here.

Another crucial tip that can save our loved ones from heart disease is knowing hands-only CPR. Watch a one-minute video here on how to correctly count and place chest compressions. You can also sign up for a local CPR class through American Red Cross.

City Hall will also be lit in red through February 10th to continue raising awareness.
Ladies Night Out in
Downtown Willow Glen

Support our small businesses, treat yourself, and find a gift for that special someone at Ladies Night Out on Thursday, February 9th from 5PM-8PM.

With over 20 Downtown Willow Glen businesses participating, this is a night to bond over shopping and refreshments.
Second Saturday on The Alameda

A cute early Valentine's date would be strolling The Alameda on Saturday, February 11th.

You and your loved one can listen to live music, eat at locally-owned restaurants, and check out art made by local artists.
February Bascom Library
Book Sale

If reading more books was one of your New Year's Resolutions, buy more titles at this month's Friends of Bascom Library Book Sale.

The sale will be on Saturday, February 25th from 10AM-2PM.

All proceeds go directly back to the Bascom Library to provide funding for library programs and supplies.

Vaccinations and Boosters

Colder temperatures are still upon us. Protect yourself from COVID-19, the flu, and the cold by getting vaccinated and boosted.

Children ages six months to four years old can receive their COVID-19 vaccine. Please call your child's doctor to ask for the vaccine. If your child does not have a regular doctor, call (866) 967-4677 for assistance enrolling in government programs or health coverage.
Warming Centers

Santa Clara County has opened Warming Centers because we are currently facing frigid and freezing temperatures. See locations near you.

Make sure to wear layers and bring your pets and plants inside.
How to Dispose of Old Mattresses

In an effort to curb illegal dumping and encourage Californians to recycle their mattresses, Bye Bye Mattress has a free mattress recycling program for you.

Is Your Energy Bill Higher
Than Usual?

Many San José customers are experiencing higher PG&E bills this month due to higher natural gas prices. San José Clean Energy (SJCE) – the local energy provider operated by the City of San José –has tips on how to lower usage and save money.

If you cannot afford your bill, check out SJCE's Discount Programs to help pay back what you owe and lower future bills. You can also set up a payment plan with PG&E.

To avoid high gas bills in the future, consider switching to electric. Electric appliances do not emit harmful gases and need less energy to do their job, helping you save money and the planet.
