President's Message
Dr. Priscilla Tu
Season’s Greetings, AOASM Family!
This time of year always feels rushed and hectic for everyone, especially for those of us in the sports world with all the games being played, covered, and watched in so many sports at all levels… not to mention the upcoming holidays!
Notable Updates: Even with everything that is going on, we have had lots of members representing us across the world! Drs. Brett DeGooyer and Mark Rogers recently returned from France to teach the SportsOsteopathy™ course to our colleagues overseas. Several AOASM members served as faculty for the 2023 Advanced Team Physician Course in Salt Lake City, UT, as well. One last note of thanks to Past President, Dr. Jeffrey Bytomski, for his work on the Planning Committee for the conference as the AOASM liaison. We are also continuing to get our new website up and running, so please excuse any glitches you may see, but do let us know about them!
Conference Chair Dr. Kate Quinn continues to work with her committee to bring us a great conference come May 2024. You should have seen the Call for Abstracts email that came out earlier this month. Please consider submitting a case or research abstract – the deadline is February 5, 2024!
Committee Highlight: That being said, this month, I am highlighting the ones in charge of our case and research poster and podium presentations: the Research & Publications Committee. Chair John Luksch, DO, says:
“Hello everyone! I hope the holiday season is treating you and your families well! As the calendar turns, we enter the final stretch before our upcoming annual meeting in early May. One of the major responsibilities of this committee involves the collection, review, and curating of clinical case and research abstracts submitted for presentation at the 2024 Clinical Conference. All of these are put through a review process to ensure that the highest quality projects are shared with our membership in both poster and podium format. We are always looking for more interested and willing members to serve as initial reviewers, as well as judges for our poster and podium presentations! We also work to have the abstracts from our annual meeting published in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine. In addition, we help author cases for an online clinical learning tool throuch CJSM, as well as author and edit cases for "Best Practices in Sports Medicine" textbook written in collaboration with AMSSM. My hope is to have as many members as possible get involved with these projects. My goal going forward is to acknowledge and promote the research and publications of our members. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or are looking to get more involved. See you in Tulsa in early May! “
Sporting Fun: For December, let’s talk volleyball! Here are some fun facts:
1. Volleyball was originally called “mintonette” upon its invention in 1895, given its similarities to badminton, but was later changed to volleyball due to the objective to "volley" the ball back and forth across the net.
2. Most volleyball players jump approximately 300 times in a match.
3. Only one person has won an Olympic gold medal as both a player and a coach – People’s Republic of China’s Lang Ping (as a player for the women’s team in 1984, as a coach in 2016).
4. Standard indoor volleyballs differ from beach volleyballs – they are slightly smaller, have a smoother surface, and have a higher internal pressure.
5. The first beach volleyball games were played in Europe, and they were played by nudists! Beach volleyball gained popularity, in its clothed form, in the US in the 1920s and was officially added as an Olympic sport in 1996.
That about wraps things up for 2023! I wish you all a safe and joyful holiday season spent with your loved ones! See you all next year! 😊
