Weekend of September 23, 2022

The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost

What's Next?

WHAT S NEXT CONCEPT

"What's next?" I've learned from Mtr. Liz that President Bartlett from The West Wing uses this phrase a lot when he's ready to move on in a meeting. One of these days I'll get around to streaming The West Wing for myself, but for now I'll say "What's next?" in meetings just to get a laugh out of her.

Last Sunday, this phrase came to mind when our new receptees into The Episcopal Church renewed their Baptismal Covenant, along with everyone present. When you're working towards confirmation, reception, or formal reaffirmation of faith in the Church it can feel like the end in itself is the liturgy with the Bishop. That couldn't be further from the truth. It's not the end of the journey, but a milestone. The same is true every time we renew our Baptismal Covenant with those being formally recognized. Once we reaffirm those vows, the question then is, "What's next?" Now that we've made vows--which is serious--we have to live them.

What's next? Well, I encourage you to look again at the Covenant. Read the vows you've made with fresh eyes. Note the verbs: continue, persevere, repent, return, proclaim, seek, serve, love, strive, respect. What's next? It's living out the vows, it's doing the verbs, it's walking the walk.

There are a myriad of ways to do this every day in every encounter you have with the people around you. As you read through the email below you can find all sorts of ways to do that by engaging with the church, and I encourage that, but that's not the whole of it. We live our vows most powerfully in little ways every day as we engage with the world. Maybe, however, as you read those vows it will lead you to more questions. That's what Mtr. Liz and I are here for--to live out our vows of baptism and ordination by equipping you for ministry. Think of us as spiritual personal trainers. We're here for you. Reach out anytime.

What's next? In short, keep the faith St. Paul's. Keep the faith.
