Rabbi's Message

וּקְרָאתֶם דְּרוֹר בָּאָרֶץ לְכׇל־יֹשְׁבֶיהָ
You shall proclaim liberty throughout the land for all its inhabitants. (Lev. 25:10)

Two-hundred and forty-six years ago this month our nation declared its independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. A war would follow, and then almost twelve years later a new sovereign republic under the authority of a ratified constitution was born. Every July we celebrate our independence from a nation more than three-thousand miles away and remember that our freedom from that yoke came at a great price.

As we celebrate independence, we also recognize our interdependence. As citizens and residents of this nation we are deeply connected to each other and to the rest of the world, bearing both rights and responsibilities. The Leviticus verse cited above, displayed on the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, in its context refers to the jubilee celebration and the remission of debts and servitude, the returning of all to their holdings. Only by participating fully in a free society do we merit the benefits of its blessings – both the private and the public. We are independent of another nation, but we are not independent from each other or from our obligations of citizenship.

This Independence Day our nation is at a liminal moment. We are far from the fulfillment of Psalms 85:11-12: “Kindness and truth meet; justice and well-being kiss. Truth springs up from the earth; justice looks down from heaven.” We are living at a time when viciousness and lies run free without consequence, when reckless disregard for decency and law are loudly applauded.

As Jews we know the dangers of taking liberty for granted. We know the precariousness of a republic held captive by demagoguery and fearmongering. We know that liberty exists only as long as we are willing to demand it. We are heirs to a great tradition of learning and accountability, and we look to God for strength and to each other for reinforcement and security.

Though less quotable than “We hold these truths to be self-evident…,” the Declaration of Independence concludes with these words:

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

We must be willing at all times to pledge our interdependence for the sake of something greater than ourselves, and insist that those elected to positions of authority do the same.

Sunday, October 2 – Chadash meets off site at the Alliance Cemetery
Sunday, October 9 – Chadash Sukkot celebration
Sunday, October 30 – Consecration

Sisterhood is asking that any congregants who have college aged students in the Armed Services send in their addresses for the 2022-2023 school year. Also, if any grandparent would like to send a Rosh Hashana goody box to their college age grandchild, please send in their address and a check made out to Temple Israel Sisterhood for $10 by September 1, 2022.

The Jane Zoldan Blood Drive   

Please join us Thursday, August 11 from 3:30 pm – 7:30 pm at Beit Ha'am as we resume our Annual Blood Drive, in memory of Janie Zoldan.
Janie loved greeting all of the donors and thanking them for their life-saving donations. This year, we will gather in her honor. Starting July 1, donors may register and schedule their blood donation through a soon-to-be active website. We will post the website link in the weekly eNewsletter beginning July 5.
