Friday, April 4, 2025 | Fifth Sunday in Lent | |
Dear People of St. Paul's,
As part of our Lenten Soup Supper series, we have been reading Oliver Burkeman’s Meditations for Mortals. While this is not a theological tome, Burkeman’s book is a practical companion to the biblical and spiritual reflections shared in our gatherings. And his approach to the topic of mortality is one of grace. He encourages his readers to remember that living into our mortality, limitations, and imperfections can actually help us live with more peace, clarity and purpose.
A great example of how this unexpected embrace of imperfection can work is the notion of scruffy hospitality. This is a term coined by American priest Jack King and introduced by Burkeman in our readings this week. By engaging scruffy hospitality, Burkeman encourages us to welcome others into our lives and homes even though we don’t have it all together. When we think about extending hospitality, there is always a temptation to offer up the very best version of ourselves. But real connection is fostered by allowing others to see our less-than-perfect selves and by welcoming others’ less-than-perfect selves too. Being welcome just as we are is the ultimate gift of hospitality, and it can happen just about anytime, anywhere!
So for our homework this week, we are engaging in some scruffy hospitality by getting together with other people, even though our house, our food, and our lives are less-than-perfect. Even if you’re not a part of the class, I hope you will do this too! Call someone up, invite them over, or get together with them somewhere just to enjoy being together. In times of real uncertainty, it is the breadth and depth of our connections that sustains us, and I look forward to hearing what a little imperfect hospitality does for your perspective and your spirits this week!
Blessings,
Mtr. Morgan

This Sunday’s Anthem at St. Paul’s
We are honored to present Hymn to God in My Sickness, a new work for organ and choir by our own Kurt Knecht. Commissioned by members of the St. Paul’s Choir, this anthem was composed to celebrate and honor our Director of Music and conductor, Sam Anderson.
The piece sets a text by John Donne, the 17th-century poet and Anglican priest. Written during a time of grave illness, the poem reflects a soul preparing for death—not with fear, but with hope and trust in God’s mercy. Donne’s words invite us into a deeper contemplation of faith, mortality, and divine love.
We look forward to premiering this powerful new work in worship on Sunday!

Campus Improvement Projects: Enhancing Safety and Expanding Access
Thanks to the support of the Day School community, this year’s SPEDS Auction was a tremendous success—raising over $560,000! Of that, $350,000 has been designated for the Fund-a-Need project: the construction of two new parking lots to expand access to our growing campus.
These improvements come at a time of remarkable growth for both the church and the school. With the school at full capacity and increased attendance and engagement on Sundays, expanding parking is an important step in supporting our community.
The parking lots include:
- A lot on the southeast corner of the existing field, as part of the long-term campus Master Plan.
- A second lot at the current garden space at 40th and Walnut.
Together, these lots will add approximately 60 additional spaces to campus.
As designs take shape and details are finalized, we will continue to keep the congregation informed and provide opportunities for engagement and feedback.
We are also committed to honoring the memorials currently located in these areas. Church leadership will work directly with families to ensure these spaces are relocated with care and remain a meaningful part of our campus. Additionally, while the current garden will be removed, we’ve identified a potential location for a new garden, should someone be interested in leading that ministry.

Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Discussions: April 13 & 27
"There is no greater glory than to die for love." ~ Love in the Time of Cholera
Please join us in reading this classic story of love and finitude! The book has no chapter names or numbers, but for April 13, we'll read up to the chapter beginning, "The day that Florentino Ariza saw Fermina Daza in the atrium of the Cathedral, in the sixth month of her pregnancy..." We'll finish the book on April 27.
Everyone is welcome! Come to the Archive Room on the third floor at 11:45 after coffee hour to join in the discussion. If you'd like to personally receive updates and discussion questions in advance, please register by emailing Nancy. Hope to see you there!
