2022-23 School Theme: 60 Years - A Tradition of Excellence

It might have been the 500th time I heard, “Character is destiny,” when I first became frustrated. Heraclitus certainly had a point when he shared those words. Students need to know what Character means on this day - not when they're looking back at the end of their lives.
Mr. Smeeth, my first Headmaster, wrote that Character was about “integrity, courage, zest, commitment, steadfastness, responsibility.” I’d like to think Mr. Smeeth would smile when I say, "Character is action."
When someone says they feel, they want, they hope to do good things, those are empty words. A person of character acts! A BA high schooler once went into the opposing team's locker room after a game to demand that one of their players apologize for using an ethnic slur on a little girl who was crying outside. A Middle School student stepped up and very calmly told someone new to BA, who was picking on a weaker child, that this wasn’t how we treat people at the Academy. These are individuals who took action and became a part of the foundation of our Star of Character.
Every day, each of us has so many chances to exercise that Star within us. How does one face hardship, adversity, or challenge? The answer is not to want to do the right thing, but rather to do it, no matter how hard. Remember, Character is action!
~ Mr. Jim Homan, Level 7 History, BAME
