Dear Residents –

Congratulations to the Blauvelt Sons of Italy on their successful Italian Feast and Carnival this past weekend. After a 2-year hiatus, it was great to see so many of you at the German Masonic Grounds on Friday evening. From what I saw, if you were there and did not have a great time you only have yourself to blame!

On Sunday the Rockland Road Runners held their annual South Nyack 10 Miler Race, but with a twist. The race ran over (and back) the Shared Use Path on the Tappan Zee Bridge, for a total of 7.8 miles. Congratulations to all who ran the race, including my daughter Caitlin who took third place in her age group.

I would like to thank everyone who came out, despite the rain, to Orangetown’s Annual September 11th Ceremony this past Sunday. It was ever so clear that Orangetown stands by its promise to never forget. Special thanks to all who participated in the program.

Fall will be here before you know it and with its arrival lots of fresh vegetables and fruits - like apples, pumpkins and corn, to name just a few. The Nyack Farmers Market is open year-round, every Thursday, from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm, in the Main Street parking lot in Downtown Nyack.

I hope to see you at one or more of the events taking place this weekend. But whatever you do, make sure you get out and enjoy the weather, it promises to be picture perfect!

Regards,

Teresa M. Kenny

School is back in session. Consider leaving additional time for your morning commute as there will be additional cars, school buses, bicyclists, and pedestrians you will be sharing the road with.

Below are some additional safety tips that if followed will help keep everyone safe.

·        Slow down - Speed limits in school zones are reduced for a reason. A pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling at 25 mph is nearly two-thirds less likely to be killed compared to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling just 10 mph faster.

·        Come to a complete stop - Research shows that more than one-third of drivers roll through stop signs in school zones or neighborhoods. Always come to a complete stop, checking carefully for children on sidewalks and in crosswalks before proceeding.

·        Eliminate distractions - Research shows that taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your chances of crashing. And children can be quick, crossing the road unexpectedly or emerging suddenly between two parked cars. Reduce risk by not using your cell phone or eating while driving, for example.

·        Reverse responsibly - Every vehicle has blind spots. Check for children on the sidewalk, in the driveway and around your vehicle before slowly backing up. Teach your children to never play in, under or around vehicles.

·        Watch for bicycles - Children on bikes are often inexperienced, unsteady and unpredictable. Slow down and allow at least three feet of passing distance between your vehicle and a bicyclist. If your child rides a bicycle to school, require that he or she wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet on every ride.

·        Talk to your teen - Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States, and nearly one in four fatal crashes involving teen drivers occur during the after-school hours of 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Upcoming Events

Annual NYPD vs FDNY

Gaelic Football Match

For the past few years, the Rockland Gaelic Athletic Association has been host to the Annual Football match between the NYPD and the FDNY.  Each organization raises money for a fellow member who is in need of financial assistance.  This year the FDNY is raising money for Dan Duggan and the NYPD is asking for help for Claire Hoban, daughter of Stephen Hoban.  Come out for two great causes and enjoy an afternoon in the sun.

Car Seat Check

On Saturday, September 24th, from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM the NEW YORK STATE POLICE will be hosting a FREE safety seat inspection at the Orangeburg Fire House. This event is sponsored by the New York State Police, Orangeburg Fire Dept. and NYS Governor's Traffic Safety Committee.
