From the Minister

Dear Church,

It will be so nice to come back to you after an inspiring week of professional development in beautiful Phoenix, Arizona! This Sunday, as Ordinary Time comes toward a close and we move into the week of Thanksgiving, we will honor those who stewarded the land in Boston prior to the 17th century with a Land Acknowledgement. Further, our scripture will call us to reflect upon our fears (and our complacency); we will be reminded that much is required of those to whom much is given.

If you are curious for specifics about my week away, I have been learning about Murray Bowen's Family Systems as it relates to faith communities. (And leading the electric slide with colleagues and new friends- see photo!). I hope to see you this weekend to tell you all about the excitement and learnings. Come to church for community, come for solace.

Grace and peace,

Sam

From the Bench

This Thanksgiving Sunday, we open with the first movement of Elfrida Andrée’s Organ Symphony. The choir will sing Calvin Hampton’s version of We Plow the Fields as well as a Thanksgiving Anthem by William Selby, organist at King’s Chapel in the late 18th century. We close with Selby’s Voluntary in D

Conversation with the Wardens

Your Wardens, Betsy Peterson and Stephen Courtney, are following Joy’s example in inviting individual conversations. We’d especially like to see you after church, and commit to being available after both Morning Light and Morning Prayer for the next few weeks. If you would like to ensure an uninterrupted conversation, let us know, so we can set up an appointment.

Transgender Day of Remembrance Event Saturday, Nov 18, 12:00- 4:00 PM

Jackson Mann Community Center, Allston

The Community Action Committee invites you to attend TransResistance's event to mark the 25th anniversary since Rita Hester was murdered. Her life not only mattered but inspired a local and international movement and day of mourning for the Trans people we have lost in our community. Join TRMA, MTPC, TEF, Network la Red, the Mayor’s LGBTQ office and the Equity Fund of the Boston Foundation for this year’s TDOR to hear speeches, performances and gather in community with food to take time to remember those we have lost to violence. This event will have ASL interpreters and mental health counselors for support. All donations from this event will go to TEF and BHCHP as we believe basic needs are the first way to protect trans people. More information here.

23rd Annual SHVAM Opening Ceremony:

Survivors of Homicide Victims Awareness Month

Monday, Nov 20, 10:00 AM- 12:00 PM

MA State House Great Hall, 24 Beacon St.

Enacted in 2000, SHVAM is a month-long effort to inform, influence, and impact how society views and responds to murder victims and their families.

SHVAM offers an opportunity to educate the public and policymakers about the effect that murder has on families and communities, and to uplift the peace-building efforts of survivors. It also provides a dedicated space around the holiday season for survivors to gather in community and celebrate and honor their loved ones.

Help us kick off the 23rd Annual SHVAM alongside fellow survivors, community partners, and elected officials. This year, we are excited to be back and in-person at the Massachusetts State House for the Opening Ceremony. We hope to see you there!

Sunday Concert Series: Music, She Wrote

Sunday, Nov 26, 5:00 PM

Our next Sunday concert is the first of a double-header (second installment coming up in January) entitled Music, She Wrote. It consists of organ works by female composers, ranging from pioneering Elfrida Andrée (who petitioned the Swedish parliament to become the first female organist in all the land), Amy Beach (first successful American female composer), and Florence Price (first African-American female composer to have her music performed by a major symphony orchestra), to more contemporary fare, such as Nancy Plummer Faxon's festive Toccata and Emma Lou Diemer’s fiery Fiesta.

As always, you save $5 by getting tickets ahead of time at

It's that time of year again... time to grab our gloves and sheers and help to decorate the sanctuary for the Advent season! Please join us on Dec 2 to help hang garlands and wreaths throughout the sanctuary, add greens to the outdoor planters, and place poinsettias on the windowsills. Fueled by coffee and donuts, you are guaranteed a wonderfully spirited, fun-filled start to the Advent season, whatever your age. E-mail Laura to let us know you will be there- the more the merrier, and the faster we finish the job!!!
