A Message from Dr. David Glasner

I wanted to take a few minutes to send my appreciation to the Shaker Heights community for the passage of Issue 13. Your support is vital to the success of the Shaker Heights Schools, and I am grateful to be a part of a community that cares deeply about its schools.

I know many people are curious about what happens next. While it will be some time before the community will see any construction begin, work is already underway and we want to share some of the steps that we are taking with you.

Community Stakeholder Group Selection

Residents who applied to serve on the Shaker Schools Facilities Advisory Committee will be notified of their application status early this week. The District received applications from 85 residents wishing to serve on the committee. Submissions were due November 6.

The committee is a stakeholder group that will help shape and guide implementation of the Long-Term Master Facilities Plan, provide community feedback as the District works to implement the Master Facilities Plan and engage with the broader community regarding the implementation of the Master Facilities Plan.

The stakeholder group will consist of approximately 30 members. Half of the group was determined by lottery and half was appointed by the District and Board of Education to ensure equitable demographic and geographic representation. It is expected the group will hold its first meeting in December and will meet monthly thereafter.

Middle Years Building Planning

Planning continues for the design and renovation of Woodbury Elementary School into a Middle Years Building serving Grades 6-8. In order to advance this planning, the District is in the process of forming staff working groups.  These working groups will begin reviewing and discussing details for the transition to K-5 buildings and to determine 6th grade swing space needs and plans during the Woodbury renovation process.

The construction schedule for a Middle Grades Building currently calls for the design to take place in 2024-2025 and construction to begin in 2025-2026. The building would open in 2027-2028. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.

Ludlow Construction Manager At Risk Interviews

Interviews for Construction Manager At Risk (CMAR) for the Ludlow School renovation project were held Thursday, November 16. The District will make a recommendation to the Board of Education at its December 5 meeting. The three firms who interviewed are:

  • Gilbane Building Co.
  • Panzica Construction Co.
  • Infinity Construction Co.

Representatives from the GPD Group, the firm handling architectural and design services for conversion of the school into a PreK complex, participated in the interviews. The CMAR will oversee the renovation of Ludlow into a preK complex.

District Meets with Ohio Facilities Construction Commission

District officials met today, Monday, November 20, with representatives from the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) to discuss next steps and timing related to the bond construction project.

The District has been working with the OFCC to secure co-funding for its Master Facilities Plan, which stands at 37 percent for eligible portions of the project.
