Sunapee Happenings

The past week or so, after a January with relatively few snow flakes, the weather gods made us acutely aware that it is Winter in NH! As the snow kept falling, and we kept digging out, plans were cancelled and schools closed. But what a treat when the snow clouds cleared... the view from a high peak on Mt. Sunapee was spectacular!

CUE THE MUSIC

Let’s warm up with some toe tapping music from "Kat & Brad" at the Sunapee Coffeehouse on Friday, January 27th.

Drawing from 50s and 60s pop, American Songbook standards, and much more, this vibrant duo channels and fuses these influences through two voices, a guitar, and violin to bring you a mixture of original songs and dusted off covers from the past. The two consist of Brad Bensko on Vocals and Guitar, and Kathleen Parks (of Twisted Pine) on Vocals, and Five-Stringed Fiddle.

“Recycled Percussion” has evolved from a Goffstown NH High School Talent Show in 1995 to an acclaimed "America’s Got Talent” competition and now a permanent show on the Vegas Strip! They will be performing at the Lebanon Opera House this weekend.

Tickets & info: Lebanon Opera House

Justin Spencer formed Recycled Percussion in 1995 for a high school talent show. Spencer, looking to be more creative than using traditional instruments, took the idea of playing buckets, which was introduced to him in the subways of New York City. Spencer then added more and more instruments to the show and expanded on the New York style of street percussion. Spencer specialized in using recycled materials to build instruments.

The band started to take off in 1999 when they were featured on the cover of USA Today. Recycled Percussion began touring the country in 2001. The group continued to tour for 10 years until they made their debut on season 4 of the television show America's Got Talent. The group auditioned with over hundred acts and became the then-highest placed non-singing act to ever compete in the series' history, finishing third. They lost this distinction when Olate Dogs won season seven in 2012.

A change of pace to the classical, with the “Dublin Guitar Quartet”.

UP AND COMING IN FEBRUARY

February 1st: Fells NH Humanities program re “National Freedom Day” program

Deborah Goss, “Abby Hutchinson’s Sweet Freedom Songs”

Wednesday, February 1, 7:00pm (VIRTUAL)

Popular songs are a wonderful window for looking into social movements of America's past, as shown by singer/actress Deborah Anne Goss in her program Abby Hutchinson’s Sweet Freedom Songs. Deborah performs as New Hampshire-born abolitionist, suffragist, and singer Abby Hutchinson, who became famous singing anti-slavery songs with her brothers as ‘The Hutchinson Family Singers’ during the 1840's. There is a direct connection between the abolition movement and the campaign for woman suffrage, as the stories and songs in this lively program illustrate. There will be opportunities for audience participation, and words for some of the song choruses will be provided. This program is free and open to the public.

Please register for this virtual program by calling our office at 603-763-4789 x3 or by email info@thefells.org.

Deborah Anne Goss appears as Abby Hutchinson Patton, recalling mid-19th-century U.S. and New Hampshire history and performing rousing anthems, heartfelt ballads, and humorous ditties sung during anti-slavery and early women's rights struggles. In the 1840s and 1850s the Hutchinson Family Singers strongly influenced the opinions of the era with their popular songs promoting healthy living and social justice-most prominently the abolition of slavery. Participants are encouraged to join in the singing on several choruses or read a poem or political diatribe of the time.

This program is made possible through the support of the New Hampshire Humanities.
