Wednesday, April 30, 11 a.m. EDT. | | Bank of America Private Bank - Market Minute | | After a positive start to last week, the S&P 500 closed Friday back near correction territory. The index shed 1.5% over the week while the technology heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 2.6%. Growth continued to lag with the Russell 1000 Value Index outperforming its growth counterpart by nearly 11% year-to-date (YTD). The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury flirted with 4.4% before falling 11 basis points (bps) last Friday alone after weaker-than expected economic data. In U.S. economic news, the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index rose 0.3% in February and 2.5% over the year. Excluding food and energy, core PCE inflation came in hotter than anticipated, up 0.4% over the month, its highest monthly reading since January 2024, and 2.8% year-over-year. The third and final estimate of real gross domestic product (GDP) growth registered at an annual rate of 2.4% in Q4 2024, revised upward from 2.3%. Meanwhile, two widely watched measures of consumer sentiment declined in March. The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index fell from 64.7 to 57 as long-term inflation expectations rose to 4.1% or the highest level since 1993. The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index similarly tumbled from 100.1 to 92.9 in March with future expectations sinking to the worst level in 12 years. S&P Global manufacturing purchasing managers’ index (PMI) dipped back below 50 in March after two months in expansionary territory, per preliminary estimates. This week, tariff-related news will be a key focus for investors in addition to March’s jobs report released on Friday. | | New Ask the Fed- Sunset of the FFIEC CAT Session 2: A Discussion with the CRI - April 10, 2:00 p.m. | |
