Prayer for the Beginning
of a New School Year
Gracious God, we come to you at the beginning of this academic year
with our many feelings, expectations, fears and hopes.
Help us to remember, however, we have the comforting
assurance from you: "I will always be with you."
Loving God, for all of us this is a time of transition. It is transition
from the work and leisure of summer back to the classroom.
It is a transition from time spent with family and friends.
Give us patience with ourselves as we transition as well as
patience with one another.
Faithful God, this beginning is totally new for some among us.
Turn the sadness of leaving friends and families to openness to new friends
and opportunities. Turn the anxiety about academics to a quiet confidence
in the way you have blessed us in the past.
Give us a new perspective to see persons, events, and academic work as an
invitation to develop the many gifts you have given us to be used in service for others.
Creator God, some in our community are moving into their last year.
Bless them with your gifts of awe and wonder at the friends they have made,
the way their minds and hearts have been changed, and the many opportunities
that lie ahead. Give them the gift of discernment to make the right choices about the future.
Finally, God, give us the seven gifts of the Spirit: wisdom, understanding, right judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence, and awe and wonder.
Amen.

Rose Garden Residents
Help Needed!
St. Martin of Tours School annually puts on the Rose Garden Homes Tour to raise needed dollars to support our students in their education. We are in desperate need of a Rose Garden home to serve as our Tea House the weekend of October 14-16, 2022. The Tea House is the final home of the Homes Tour and the backyard is used to entertain attendees, serve light food and drink, and host the event boutique. The Tea House does not allow attendees in the house – all we need is the backyard! If you or someone you know would be interested in hosting this event, please contact David Cortese, Principal, St. Martin of Tours School – dcortese@stmartin.org or via phone at 408.287.3630.

CLOW
Children's Liturgy of the Word Resumes
We will resume Children’s Liturgy of the Word for elementary school kids on August 28th at the 8:30 AM and 10:00 AM Masses. Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) offers the children an opportunity to listen and respond to the Sunday Gospel at an age-appropriate level.
Children are led out of the church before the Liturgy of the Word to read the Mass readings in a simpler form and help the children reflect and talk about what the readings mean for their lives. The children return to the church during the collection so everyone can participate in the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
If you have any questions, please contact Lerma Simpson at lerma.simpson@dsj.org or (408) 294-8953 x321.

Family Reflection
August 14, 2022 20th Sunday of Ordinary Time
Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10 • Hebrews 12:1-4 • Luke 12:49-53
“Let us persevere in running the race.” —Hebrews 12:1
If you’ve ever been to a running race where there is a crowd of people cheering on the runners, you’ll know what the author of the second reading is talking about. Maybe you’ve even been in a race yourself, perhaps in a P.E. class at school or with other kids in your neighborhood. Isn’t it easier to run harder and faster with people cheering you on? When runners are tired or they think they can’t keep going, it’s helpful to have others cheering for them and boosting their energy so they can make it to the finish line. This Bible reading tells us that there are many people—“a great cloud of witnesses” —surrounding us and cheering us on while we run the race of life, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus. We may not be able to see and hear them, but they are there, invisibly rooting us on. There are angels and saints and people we know who have died who are cheering for us and supporting us as we try to follow Jesus and be the best people we can possibly be. They are always encouraging us to “keep going—keep running!”
PRAYER: God, when I am tired or down, help me to remember there are many people who are rooting for me and encouraging me.
FAMILY REFLECTION: Who do you think is in your “great cloud of witnesses” cheering you on?
