“Refreshing the Sanctuary for Lent”
The church knew what it was doing when it aligned its feasts with the seasons. The church assigned Christmas to one of the shortest days of the year. Here in the northern hemisphere, we decorate with lights to brighten the long winter nights. Ash Wednesday, the start of the season of Lent, daffodil bulbs buried five to six inches in the cold, dark, compacted earth carefully wait and cautiously glance before setting out. Leafless, but inside the maples, the sap is running.
The church calendar parallels the path of nature. During Lent we plunge into 40 days like the earth waiting for the spring fling. What is it that finally signals the bulb? What does it take to nudge us out of the sluggish sleepy tempo of winter? Lent is that time. You’ll notice we’ve turned the banners in the choir loft to their blank sides to represent that nature and spring life is still hidden, buried beneath the ground. We put stones out to remind us of the way our hearts might have been hardened by life’s challenges… Saddened by the news we read… Chipped or broken by illness or suffering or witnessing the suffering of others.
It’s Lent. Let’s work to soften the hearts that have become stony and repair the hearts that have been broken. Let’s be more mindful of the earth and the way we treat it since new life and the sustenance of all life begins there. Let’s keep close to the trunk, the strength and source through which life flows. Let the beautiful elm tree trunk in our sanctuary, now decorated, supporting our altar of mercy and love, remind us that Jesus, like the tree trunk, is the center and source of strength in our life.
As we prayed in our prayers last Sunday… As animals hibernate and fields lay dormant, let them be a reminder that life and faith are not static but always changing and growing. May we, with all creation, trust that the ending of one thing promises life in a new way. God of grace, hear our prayer.
A special word of thanks to Cheryl and Norb Steinbach for creatively gathering materials and placing our lenten decorations and to Jim and Wendy Haas for their help with the banners.
We wish you a Blessed Lent.

With gratitude from Pastor Jackie
3 I thank my God every time I remember you, 4constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, 5because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. 6I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:3-6
These words from the Apostle Paul bubble up in my heart as I reflect upon the generosity of Christ the King. When Barb Hamann presented the financial statements and projections, there was a resounding “Praise God from whom all blessing flow.” Many thanks to all of you for turning your blessings into blessing CTK, your beloved congregation. Through the generosity of past legacy gifts and members, our financial position stands on solid ground.
As we move forward with our capital improvements, our church home, legacy and joy are being refreshed to the glory of God! Our 2025 ministry initiatives (aka goals) continue the theme of refreshing---“Refreshing our Mission Together.” Below are those initiatives. Now comes the holy work and joy of implementing them. I encourage everyone to read and pray about them. How will you implement them in committees, groups, and everything that you do? How will you answer God’s call to be refreshed in 2005? Click below for our Initiatvies.

Midweek Lenten "Dinner Church" at Christ the King
“Worship through the Senses”
Friends,
In line with CTK’s ministry initiative of refreshing our faith and joy through spiritual practices--- we will implementing a new approach for the mid-week Lenten worship. We will be combining the fellowship meal with the worship service and meeting in the great hall.
Beginning with Ash Wednesday and each Wednesday in Lent thereafter, we will gather in the Great Hall beginning at 5pm for social time, with a 5:15 start for “Dinner Church.” The meal will be ready shortly after you arrive, and time will be allotted during the service to serve yourself if you arrive a bit later.
On Ash Wednesday, there will be the traditional imposition of ashes and Holy Communion.
The subsequent services will be shorter and without Holy Communion. Each table will be given a copy of the reading(s) and questions that will be discussed during the service. You will have the opportunity to participate in mediation stations that follow the weekly theme:
March 12: Sight
March 19: Sound
March 26:Scent
April 2: Touch
April 9: Taste
We hope this new approach refreshes you! The worship and music team welcome your feedback after you have had a chance to experience this time of renewal.

Jambo Rafiki (Greetings, friends!)
Pam. Rich and I were blessed with a life-changing trip to our friends in Christ in the Mt. Meru Diocese of Tanzania. We traveled with 16 others including Bishop Paul Erickson, Assistant to the Bishop Pr. Afi Dobbins-Mays, pastors and lay leaders. We practice the ELCA value of accompaniment which means that we walk alongside others. We did not bring God to the people of Tanzania, God is already there growing their churches by leaps and bounds. We saw God in the relationships with the Diocese and the ministries of the Diocese.
Here are some highlights...

Thank you to all who support this mission!
Mt. Meru coffee is available for purchase in the upper sanctuary. Orders placed by the 3rd Sunday of each month will be available for pick up on the 4th Sunday after Service.
This global outreach is helping farm families in the Meru Diocese in Tanzania. This project is giving the farmers a hand-up rather than a handout.
For questions, please see Toni Schnorr, Lynn Waedekin or a member of the Outreach Committee.

Nature spirituality and the Milwaukee Wild Church
Dear Greater Milwaukee Synod Friends, I want to invite you and your friends to a forum to learn more about nature spirituality and the Milwaukee Wild Church. This summer we are planning to launch a weekly gathering for our community of nature lovers in the Milwaukee area. We have the support of Bishop Paul Erickson and we are working on grants and support from the ELCA and the Siebert Lutheran Foundation. Please join us at Mt. Carmel Lutheran church at 1030 am on Sunday, March 2 for an adult forum in their fellowship hall. They are located at 8424 West Center Street in Milwaukee. They are close to Mayfair Mall. If you have any questions feel free to give me a call at 262/344/5942.

Global Refuge
Our office has had several calls this week from congregations looking to contact the former Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, now known as Global Refuge.
Some of those congregations had mixed up the name of that organization, referencing "Global Rescue," "Global Response," or other similar names.
Please note that Global Refuge is the proper name for this organization.
You can visit their website at https://www.globalrefuge.org/.
We recommend contacting Global Refuge directly with inquiries; if you are looking to send financial support, we also recommend that you contact them directly (as the quickest and most efficient way to put your donation to work immediately.) Their contact address in Baltimore is located on the bottom of their webpage.
You will also find some excellent resources from Global Refuge (and others) on our new Immigration Resources page at https://milwaukeesynod.org/immigration/.
