Seeding Progress & Crop Conditions

After a mild winter, spring has finally arrived in Montana! Seeding season was well underway and was ahead of the five-year average by the end of April. Dry conditions and lack of snowpack allowed growers to enter fields earlier than most years resulting in nearly one third of the spring wheat, durum, and barley seeding completed by April 30. Although most production areas are classified as abnormally dry, winter wheat condition ratings are similar to the historical average at this point. Approximately half the crop is rated “fair” while the other half is “good”. Small percentages fall in the “poor” or “excellent” categories while reports of winterkill have been very limited. With the good start to the crop and the five-year average yield of 43 bushels per acre, optimism for the 2024 crop prevails.

Consulate General of Japan

MWBC hosted Consulate-General of Japan Iyori Makoto, and Economic Affairs Specialists Travis Doty, from the Seattle office. We joined the group for a visit and tour of Pasta Montana followed by a discussion at the MWBC office highlighting the close ties between Montana’s wheat producers and the Japanese people. Japan remains a consistent and reliable buyer of Montana wheat and is the fourth largest overall buyer of US wheat.

Economic Driver

MWBC staff, directors and growers attended the local Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee banquet where agriculture’s impact and importance to the statewide economy was celebrated. Scholarships were awarded to area students pursuing degrees in agriculture. Ag Business of the Year and Ag Advocate of the Year were also recognized.

Sawfly Video Series

MWBC is working with Montana State University scientists, graduate students, and growers to produce an educational video series focused on efforts to mitigate the damages resulting from the wheat stem sawfly. We will be looking at past efforts and will take a deeper dive on where we’re at today. Featured topics include the critical history of the MSU breeding program, the evolution of solid stem varieties and current research strategies. The video series will emphasize how MSU is the leading institution for wheat stem sawfly research and stress the importance of collaborating with other university research programs. We expect the video to be released in the months ahead.

Upcoming Activities

May is shaping up to be busy with promotional and educational endeavors.   Durum and barley marketing updates and discussions with representatives from Pasta Montana, Constellation and Heineken are on the MWBC agenda.  We will assist with the Gallatin County Farm Fair where we’ll get the opportunity to teach area fourth graders about where their food comes from and the importance of Montana’s wheat and barley production. We’re coordinating an educational field trip for MSU plant science students to give them a closer look at Montana’s wheat and barley industry. Visits to a shuttle elevator, the State Grain Lab and a flour mill are all part of the agenda. Cross-border trade opportunities, particularly as it relates to feed barley exports to Canada, will be the focus during a trip to Lethbridge in collaboration with the Great Falls Development Authority.   Finally, Keven Bradley and I will be attending a US What World Staff meeting in Malta.

As always, be safe and best of luck with spring fieldwork. We’re all keeping our fingers crossed that Mother Nature treats everyone well!

Webcam Up

On a brisk spring day, MWBC staff members headed to MSU's Northern Research Center, Havre, MT, to assist AgriStudios with installation of the 2024 crop webcam. Powered by solar energy, two cameras face east and west covering barley and spring wheat.

"We moved the location by a short distance this year," said Sam Anderson, market development director for MWBC. "We are crossing our fingers we will have double the coverage this year." If you think you know the first year we began the webcam, send us a note! The first correct reply will receive an MWBC apron.

Watch for the webcam livestream to show up sometime in the coming week on the MWBC website: montanawbc.com.

On The Move: Crop Reports 2024

Following a great conversation with Matthew Slivka, Winifred, to kick off spring crop reports, MWBC drove east to find growers in Jordan and Circle. This area of Montana was fairly dry at the time of filming (end of April) but had decent subsoil moisture. Brett Dailey, director for our seventh district, visited with us about conditions at his farm and ranch near Jordan. You can find his report on your YouTube channel, along with Matthew's, right here.

Part of our crop report focus this year will include talking to young producers. We are curious about how they are managing to get started under tougher economic conditions, higher land prices and the strain to farm larger acreages. Matthew is finishing his senior year at MSU-Bozeman; Beau acquired his first land lease when he was just 19 years of age.

You can look forward to hearing from these young professionals and many more growers in our upcoming reports and articles.

Wheat Continues to Rally

AgWeb.com

Wheat is higher for a 7th day on technical buying and continued fund short covering, plus U.S. and global production concerns. Allison Thompson of The Money Farm says winter wheat crop conditions have deteriorated in the U.S. Hard Red Winter wheat belt but there are also production issues in parts of Europe, Russia and Ukraine and even Canada that are gaining market attention.
