Social Determinants of Health and Mental Health,
a Role for Play Therapists
Description:
Social Determinants of health are conditions in our society where we live, work, play, etc. that determine health outcomes. Studies show that 80% of our health outcomes are determined by social determinants of health. Our client's mental health status therefore is affected by SDOH. Is there a role for play therapists beyond what happens in the playroom? Attend this presentation and become aware about the role of play therapists in regard to the SDOH.

Objectives:
1. Define Social Determinants of Health and its effect on health outcomes
2. Describe the role of play therapists relative to the SDPH of clients in therapy

Participants are invited to share their favorite books as well, especially if you have authored some.

Objectives:
1. Differentiate between directive and non-directive play therapy
2. Demonstrate children's books to address therapeutic issues commonly seen in play therapy

Tools of the Trade: What's in Your Play Therapy Toolbox?
Description:
Play therapy tools are special toys with which children play out themes in the various stages of the play therapy process. It is well known in the play therapy world, that play is the child’s language and toys are the words. Toys should be carefully selected and not just collected, as suggested by Dr. Garry Landreth, an expert in the field of play therapy. This 2-hour workshop will discuss basic toys for the playroom, as well as useful information in maintaining a functional playroom for play therapy. Additionally, emphasis will be placed on the presenter’s favorite toys/items. Examples of how these toys/items are used and metaphors that have emerged will be shared and discussed.

Objectives:
  • Identify the various themes that emerge in play therapy
  • Identify toys that may represent the various themes in play therapy

Myths and Misconceptions of Play Therapy
Description:
“How does playing with my child causes him to stop having meltdowns?” “ I want you to talk to my child, not just play with him.” Providing a clear explanation about what play therapy is, and its function, is essential in order to gain cooperation and trust. Even with precise explanations and examples, there are times when parents and caregivers are not convinced that play therapy is for their children.

By exploring myths and misconceptions about play therapy, and focusing on the benefits, therapists will have a much better understanding of how to communicate this modality to parents and caregivers. Additionally, the new therapist will have an opportunity to clarify how play therapy works to bring about healing.

Objectives:
  • Define play therapy for parents and caregivers
  • Explain how and why play therapy works as an evidence-based practice
  • State 5 myths about play therapy and why these myths occur

CHILD-CENTERED PLAY THERAPY TRAINING TESTIMONIAL

Hi Sonia, I want to thank you again for such an amazing and useful workshop! It has truly transformed how I interact with the kids I work with. When I walked into the center this morning, one of the little girls grabbed my hand and took me over to see her picture on the wall…rather than my usual “how beautiful” we had a very nice chat about how hard she worked on it, the way she used the whole page and such an intricate design…she was very proud of herself (and I accurately reflected that too!) Later I had numerous opportunities to practice letting kids do what they can really do, always the way they can’t...you should have seen my lunchbunch kids beaming with pride when they opened their own milk cartons, butter containers, and pudding cups! It was awesome! They were running around showing other kids And then staff what they had done…and never mind about the play dough…it just was on and on…that workshop was amazing!!! I have been an LPC for 15 years and I feel like I’m just starting out. You will see me again! I wish I could get the time off for the boot camp but maybe next YEAR.

Take care and God bless!!! Amy Rozett

Hi Ms. Hinds!
I wanted to take a sec to thank you for the skillful and engaging CE training you recently provided to me called the Kaleidoscope of Play. I've been a therapist for many years and really appreciate the knowledge set you provided as an educated professional with tons of front line experience, The fact is that I found myself learning not just the material but also the way you approach the material. because you talked us through so many good examples. I appreciate your openness and willingness to respond to questions during and after the class. I did not think the class was too expensive but the information was totally illuminating, and then your great teaching style brought it all together for me. Please let me know if I can help you and I wish you all the best!
Sincerely, M.Hohs
