WINE TASTING WITH WENDY KODER

OF R & B WINE IMPORTS

A veteran with more than 30 years of experience in the food and wine industry in New England, Wendy is a familiar face to many. The energy and passion she exudes have helped to create lasting relationships, both on and off premise, and with wine makers world-wide.

Although experienced in many areas of the wine industry, Wendy’s greatest satisfaction is introducing “boutique wineries” into our country. They are mostly family owned, making high quality wines and have one thing in common, the striving for excellence, which Wendy has done throughout her career. (R&B Wine Imports)

WINES

William Fevre Chile, Maipo Valley, Chile

In the mid 1990s, Burgundian winemaker William Fevre traveled to Chile looking for the perfect terroir to produce a Chardonnay. In the hills of the Maipo Valley, he found a property owned by Victor Pino Torche. The two struck a deal, began planting Chablis rootstock, and founded a winery. By 2000, the winery had grown and was exporting wine to a dozen countries, and Victor’s son Gonzalo had become the winery’s manager. Winemaker Cristian Aliaga, who studied oenology at Universidad de Chile and worked harvests at wineries in California, France, and New Zealand, joined the team. The team and the terroir have combined to produce distinguished Burgundian-style wines. We are pouring two of the William Fevre wines:

WilliamFevre Chile La Mision Gran ReservaChardonnay 2022, Maipo Valley, Chile

Varietal: ChardonnayAlc.13.5%

This Chardonnay, unlike the La Mision reds, is grown on our farm in San Juan de Pirque, a small hamlet above the Maipo Valley in the Muy Alto Maipo at almost 1,000 meters above sea level. The Chardonnay grows on the hillsides where many slides and erosion over the centuries have transformed what are extensively alluvial riverbank soils into partially colluvial soils in composition. The sharper, less weathered, less sedimentary stones of these soils allow the Chardonnay to develop a more minerally character not common for this variety in the Maipo. It is the altitude and this special soil combination that make this wine differentiate itself. The nose of this Chardonnay is fruity with hints of minerality, pears, membrillo, and tropical fruits. In the mouth, it is fresh, with lemon sherbet and honey, and a nice mouth feel. It has a touch of creaminess but it not at all buttery. Pairs well with seafood, fatty fish, goat cheese. $15.99

WilliamFevre Chile Reserva Especial Sauvignon Blanc, Malleco Valley, Chile

Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc Alc.13%

This wine is produced with grapes from dry land of Malleco Valley, in the extreme southernmost of Chilean wine land, where a few wineries started to produce fruit just generation ago. Climatic characteristics are closer to Burgundy than the warm Central Valley of Chile, giving the wine crispy acidity and lower alcohol. It has a citric nose with white flowers and lime aromas. The mouth has a vibrant acidity and a medium persistence. It is a wine with character and identity, reflecting the terroir. Pairs well with avocado salad, seafood, shellfish. $15.99

Ronchi Di Manzano Cabernet Franc, Friuli, Italy

Varietal: Cabernet Franc Alc.13%

Located in Friuli, northeastern Italy, in the Colli Orientali hills, the Ronchi di Manzano winery was established in 1969, but its vineyards have an ancient tradition of centuries. Everything started with the Counts of Trento, who had a special predilection for the Ronchi di Manzano, both for its location and for its soil composition. The vineyards were considered to be some of the best in the area, and they were highly sought after by French and Savoy noblemen. Roberta Borghese, owner and winemaker, directs the whole process of wine growing as well as the promotion of the wines she produces. Her two daughters, Lisa and Nicole, have entered the winery’s business, continuing the family tradition. This Cabernet Franc is sleek and fresh with notes of raspberries, thyme, and sour cherries. It is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and finely textured layers of red fruit. Pairs well with sausages, tomato-based dishes, roast duck. $21.99

Cascina Adelaide Barbera d’Alba, Piedmont, Italy

Varietal: Barbera Alc.14%

Cascina Adelaide was born from the dream of Amabile Drocco, who, at the age of 60 in the late 1990s, left the mechanical company he founded in Alba to his two sons to devote himself to his greatest passion. He built the Cascina Adelaide winery in 2000 at the foot of the medieval castle of Barolo; it boasts 12 hectares of vineyards, 10 of which are exclusively of Nebbiolo da Barolo with eight historical crus in five different communes. The remaining 2 hectares are of traditional varieties such as Barbera, Langhe Nebbiolo, Dolcetto di DianoD'Alba and Nascetta. Amabile’s granddaughter, Chiara, is now head of the winery. This wine has an intense violet color with floral aromas along with aromas ripe fruit jam and soft vanilla. Pure but full on the palate with a velvet like acidity on the finish. Unfined and Unfiltered. Pairs well with red meat, game, and strong cheeses. $34.99
