BEYOND GRADUATION PROGRAM NEWS, JENNIFER BOYLE
On October 19th a group of parents, including current and former CTC families, met with Paul Aronsohn, New Jersey's Ombudsman for Individuals with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities and Their Families. Mr. Aronsohn is an advocate and ally for New Jersey residents in need of critical services and supports - from early childhood through adulthood. He also has siblings with disabilities, so he brings a wealth of lived experience to his position.
Some of the topics discussed were:
- The complexity of the system of care for adults with disabilities - and the steep learning curve for families to prepare for adult life
- The NJCAT's limitations in capturing the true support needs of individuals with the highest level of need (like CTC students)
- The shortage of nurses and other support staff for individuals with disabilities
- Challenges and barriers to planning a meaningful adult life for individuals with very significant disabilities
- Accountability for group homes for health and safety violations
Mr. Aronsohn would like to meet with CTC parents and learn more about our concerns - we hope you can join this important conversation. Please look for an invitation soon!
