So then, with endurance, let's also run the race that is laid out in front of us, since we have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us. Let's throw off any extra baggage, get rid of the sin that trips us up, and fix our eyes on Jesus, faith's pioneer and perfecter.

Hebrews 12:1

Dear Covenant Family,

Last Sunday evening, we watched Nyad, a documentary that tells the remarkable true story of Diana Nyad, who at the age of 60 and with the help of her best friend and coach, commits to achieving her life-long dream: a 110-mile open ocean swim from Cuba to Florida.

The whole movie was inspirational, especially the words at the end, when Diana (played by Annette Bening) gives her brief three-point “sermon”:

• We should never give up.

• You’re never too old to chase your dreams.

• It looks like a solitary sport, but it takes a team.

Maybe because we had celebrated All Saints that morning, the third point really stuck with me. Faith sometimes looks like a solitary endeavor. On our own, we pray, ask God for guidance, seek to make wise decisions, and choose how to best serve God and neighbor. But all along the way, there are people cheering us on, praying for us, setting an example, and keeping us on the right track. Some of them have gone on to glory, but if you are fortunate to have someone like that still in your life, make sure to say thank you, again and again.

We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, the communion of saints cheering us on. Keep swimming!

Grateful to be on your team,

Pastor Jessie

Come swim with me in God—

where else to be one than in God's oneness,

leaping like dolphins in the deep. laughing ocean?
