Dear Residents –

Wow, how the summer flew by! I hope you all were able to find time to get away, relax, and spend time with your family and friends. But, now September is upon us and with it, the arrival of the dreaded school tax bill. At the suggestion of our dedicated Town Clerk/Receiver of Taxes, Rosanna Sfraga, here are some helpful tips for paying your bill:

  1) If you have a mortgage, please check if your taxes are escrowed BEFORE you write a check to the Town Clerk.

  2) If they are not escrowed, you are responsible for making payment and there are several options to do so:

           a) Mailing a personal check, money order or bank check in the envelope included with your bill to our processing center in Binghamton or directly to Town Hall;

           b) Dropping a check (no cash) into the secure collection box by the front door at Town Hall (envelopes are available if needed);

           c) Paying with cash at the Town Clerk’s Office, provided it is exact change;

           d) Paying on-line with an e-check ($.75 fee), credit card (2.45% fee) or debit card ($3.95 for Visa and $1.50 for all other debit cards). Please note that these fees do not go to the Town but to an on-line payment provider. Click here to pay your bill on-line with a credit card or an e-check.

3) Payment must be postmarked no later than 9/30/2022 to avoid penalties

Still have questions? Check out the Town website at Receiver of Taxes | Town of Orangetown or call (845) 359-5100 x 5004

And speaking of taxes, have you checked to see if you are receiving all of the tax exemptions you are entitled to? You may be eligible for property tax exemptions based on military service, if you are disabled or if you are over the age of 65 and meet household income limits. The filing period for exemptions at the Assessor's office is January 1 to March 1 each year.  Please see the Assessor’s page on the Town’s website for a direct link to the applications and instructions. The school STAR rebate for residents utilizing their property as a primary residence and meeting income requirements is administered by NYS and you can apply with them at (518) 457-2036.

On a final note, this Sunday, Orangetown will be holding its annual September 11th Memorial Ceremony at 12:30 pm. Please note that due to construction of the new Town Hall, the ceremony will be held at Veterans Memorial Park this year. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Police

Department

If you see something, say something. If in Town of Orangetown or Village of Nyack call 845-359-3700 for the Orangetown Police Department or Dial 911 immediately.

If you see

  • Unusual items or situations: A vehicle is parked in an odd location, a package/luggage is unattended, a window/door is open that is usually closed, or other out-of-the-ordinary situations occur.
  • Eliciting information: A person questions individuals at a level beyond curiosity about a building’s purpose, operations, security procedures and/or personnel, shift changes, etc.
  • Observation/surveillance: Someone pays unusual attention to facilities or buildings beyond a casual or professional interest. This includes extended loitering without explanation (particularly in concealed locations); unusual, repeated, and/or prolonged observation of a building (e.g., with binoculars or video camera); taking notes or measurements; counting paces; sketching floor plans, etc.

Some of these activities could be innocent—it’s important to consider the context of the situation. It's then up to law enforcement to determine whether the behavior warrants investigation.

Emergency Management

Access and Functional Needs Registry

Rockland County has developed this registry for residents with limited mobility or special needs, which might impact a timely response during an emergency. If you believe you, or someone you care for, is unable to independently act upon emergency protective orders, please continue with registration:

Why should you register?

    To receive individual notification when an evacuation has been ordered

    To alert local emergency personnel of your individual considerations

    To allow emergency responders an opportunity to plan and be prepared

Please be as thorough as possible in your survey responses. The information collected here will be kept confidential, and once you have enrolled, we will contact you periodically during routine testing of our automated notification system.

Please note: Surveys left unverified will be archived; individual residents after 12 months, and facility surveys after 6 months.

Remember! Personal Preparedness is Vital to All

Emergency responders rely upon you to be prepared and as self sufficient as possible. It is important for all residents to have an individual or family plan in case of an emergency. Supply yourself with an emergency preparedness kit and have emergency “drills” regularly.

*The “Go Bag” is a supply kit of basic items that are useful during emergencies. It is prepared in advance and should be placed where it is easily accessible, including during power outages. For more information on obtaining or assembling your own “Go Bag” please visit http://www.ready.gov.
