SPECIAL NEWS AND INFORMATION

SERMON NOTES

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountainside with his disciples, he took his place as teacher by sitting down, and he began to teach them about the kingdom of heaven. Last week we hear the blessings of the beatitudes. This week, on Earth Day Sunday, we will hear Jesus’ call for our lives that we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. So join us this week as we see what it means to be salty Christians in a world that so desperately needs the light of God.

May God Bless

Brandon

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL

The class class has begun reading and discussing Elaine Pagel's, The Gnostic Gospels, provocative study of the gnostic gospels and the world of early Christianity as revealed through the Nag Hammadi texts.  You are still welcome to join the group each week.

PICTURE REQUEST

Hey everyone! Over the next two Sundays, we at Watauga Avenue Presbyterian Church will be talking a lot about the nature and creation that God has made. Here is what we need from you! If you have old pictures of you or loved ones at WAPC that have elements of nature or the tree outside, we would love for you to send those into Stephen (office@wataugapc.org) at the office so that we can share those with others. We look forward to sharing in those memories together!

EARTH DAY

Watauga Avenue Presbyterian Church has had a long history of caring for and advocating on behalf of the earth. This has spurred the people of the church to start some extraordinary things in and around the city of Johnson City. Ranging from the pollinator garden, the annual plant distribution, the advocacy and witness to local governmental officials, and now our new solar panel project that is on schedule to be completed before the summer. So with all of that going on, we want to mark a special day in the life of the church year. On April 21, we will celebrate, remember, and pray for the earth that we live on and the earth that God loves. We will hear poetry, prayers, psalms, and songs all commemorating the beauty of the earth that God creates for us.

OUR POLLINATOR GARDEN IS BLOOMING

ARBOR DAY

Last year, the session made a decision to cut down the large tree in front of our building. The contract from the tree service was in hand and was a mere day or so from being signed. But then something changed. Momentum built up in a few members that wanted to attempt to rehabilitate and save the tree. So over the last year, we have had tests and treatments done to the tree. It is unclear at this moment if the damage has been reversed, but by judging the leaves sprouting, I would say that the damage has at least lessened. But similar to the way that we are honoring God’s creation of the 21st, we will be observing National Arbor Day on the 28th. On this day, we will honor the tree that we are attempting to restore as well as all the ways that trees and God’s providence provide for us!

The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier & More Creative

By Florence Williams

(155.9/WIL)

From forest trails in Korea, to islands in Finland, to eucalyptus groves in California, Florence Williams investigates the science behind nature’s positive effects on the brain.

Delving into brand-new research, she uncovers the powers of the natural world to improve health, promote reflection and innovation, and strengthen our relationships.

As our modern lives shift dramatically indoors, these ideas―and the answers they yield―are more urgent than ever.
