REJOICE WITH THE BRIDE AND GROOM

by Jo Strausz Rosen

I’m thinking about recent newlyweds Daphna Heisler and Jared Hoffman, whose joyous wedding we celebrated on October 22. On that same day, our community turned out to mourn the tragic loss of Samantha Woll z”l’. The circle that was our community at once broken with the horrific news of Sam’s murder, came together in celebration with the bride and groom, something we Jews know is a mitzvah.

A WORD-Y ANNIVERSARY

Meer's Creative Writing group, with facilitator Shari Cohen, is celebrating two years! Cohen, a professional communicator with extensive experience in corporate communications and journalism, and a contributing writer for the Detroit Jewish News, says she enjoys getting to know the participants and is inspired by them.

"I love learning about their lives and seeing what they choose to write about," Cohen says. "They want to learn, are open to new things and willingly share what they've written with the group. They have developed or, in some cases, strengthened friendships. Getting to know them has expanded my understanding of what aging gracefully truly means."

Participants write a variety of items, in a setting that Cohen calls a "no judgment zone," so that everyone will feel comfortable and safe. Cohen looks forward to continuing the group for a long time, hopes to create a booklet with samples of the participants' writing, and also to find a professional writer to come and speak with the group.

Centenarian Celebration

Members of Ruth Goldstein's family honored their Matriarch with a special donation to Coville Assisted Living Apartments. Administrator Mona Hanson-Hill used the generous contribution to purchase a custom Amish leather and oak rocking chair. The reveal of the chair, along with a plaque that will be hung in the living room, took place in front of her granddaughters, grandson-in-law and their pup, Honey, along with 20 residents, caregivers and staff at Coville who toasted to her good health. The plaque that accompanies the beautiful hand-crafted rocker says, “In Honor of Ruthie Goldstein’s Birthday… Sit down and visit for a while.”

FRIENDS OF JSL

It’s hard to write right now. I’m more inclined to be jumping up and down with excitement. Lives Well Lived is NEXT WEEK! If you’re not already signed up, it’s not too late. Enjoy a nosh and a schmooze with your friends and the residents who shared their stories in “Don’t Count Me Out!". I got an advance copy and it looks amazing. Did I mention I’m so excited? It’s a great collection of stories from a really wonderful bunch of storytellers. And it will be on sale for the first time at Lives Well Lived ($18).

We’ll also be screening “Death Metal Grandma,” “Wendy’s Shabbat,” and “Young at Heart,” the Oscar-winning short film by Detroiter Sue Marxzl. Her friends Jack Lessenberry and Bill Haney will share a tribute to Marx. All-in-all, I expect this to be the feel-good event of the season (or at least tied with the Bessie Spector Oldest Jewish Americans Celebration and Eight Over Eighty).

Check out the JN coverage here.

And, if you want to know the inside scoop on the JSL book project, I shared the adventure in my own (sometimes ridiculous) words on Nu?Detroit.

Also, check out Sunday’s Free Press for a piece by Neal Rubin that includes our own Edie Blumer!

Lives Well Lived: Wrinkles in Time will be at The J, Tuesday, November 14 at 7:00pm. Ticket includes free valet parking, dessert pre-glow, and films. Tickets / sponsorships can be purchased online. Hope to see you there!

SHABBAT SHALOM

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain

The Antidote to Fear

Shortly after 9/11, a resident named Bella frantically approached me, “I am deeply concerned. My two sons and their wives traveled abroad. I want to ensure their safe return.”

I listened and then asked her, "Their purpose for travel?" And she replied, “Sightseeing.”

I responded, “How about looking at it this way: they traveled as a mitvah to witness the magnificence of G-d’s world. Having gone sightseeing means they traveled to benefit from the pleasures they witnessed. They are in awe of Him and his work in the world and will forever remember this trip. The promise of our Sages will protect them – 'Those dispatched to perform a mitzvah will not be harmed.'"

Bella was relieved to hear these comforting words and indeed her children returned safely.

Now, during the war in Israel and the increase of anti-Semitism around the world, it is vital to seek meaning in everyday moments, maintain a close and ongoing relationship and bless The One who continually creates, maintains and sustains every part of creation for us.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
