The Ally: Bullying Prevention and Disabilities

Last week, we shared with you that several vital causes that touch the lives of families who are part of Families as Allies are recognized and celebrated in October: National Bullying PreventionADHD AwarenessDown Syndrome Acceptance,  Disability History and AcceptanceNational Disability Employment AwarenessLGBTQ+ History, and Breast Cancer Awareness. We promised to share information about these causes throughout the month.

This week, we highlight National Bullying Prevention Month on our blog. I hope you find the information about bullying prevention resources, Mississippi laws about bullying at school and how to talk to your child about bullying helpful. I want what we share to be practical and make a real difference as you advocate for and support your children daily. Don't forget that Wednesday, October 18, is Unity Day. Wear your orange to "unite for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying."

Our resource section shares information related to Disability History and Acceptance and National Disability Employment Awareness. In my journey as a mom of a child with disability, what has mattered most to me when it comes to "awareness" is the people around my child realizing how they can adapt their perspectives and what they do rather than conjecturing about what they think he should do or seeing him as heroic. I think many parents and people with disabilities feel the same way. The resources we share are from that perspective. I hope they help us all expand how we see things.

We will discuss bullying of children with IEPs in more depth on October 19 at noon CDT at our Virtual Bring Your IEP and Other School Questions. Families with any school questions are welcome to join us. Check out our events calendar for more training and support opportunities!
