Church News

October is "Clergy Appreciation" month

The St. Barnabas church family is blessed to have several ordained pastors who call St. Barnabas their church home. Several are fully retired from serving the church, some are serving the church in interim calls, and some are still working in settings that allow them to have a different home church. All of these St. Barnabas members have served the church and carried the message of the gospel in many and varied settings. The church council would like to lift them up in a prayer of thanks for their roles in spreading the gospel of love and care and now for blessing us as a member of the St. Barnabas Family.

Today we welcome our newest members of St. Barnabas Lutheran Church. Please extend a warm welcome to: Robbie Cordo, Irene Reid, Michael Barnes and Walt & Barb Hannemann as they join us in ministry at St. Barnabas. Take time to introduce yourself following worship service.

Rooted in Love...2024 General Fund Pledge Drive

Today we begin our season of giving as we kick off our Fall Pledge Drive for our General Fund. Following worship service, Bill Welshons will have a time for questions and answers in the Sanctuary regarding our 2024 budget. Please grab your packet which is located near the church entrance and coffee and join us after worship. Our Pledge Drive will culminate in our Ingathering Sunday on November 19 where we will receive the completed envelopes. Packets that haven't been picked up will be mailed out on November 6th.

Reformation Announcement:

Next Sunday, October 29th is Reformation Sunday, on which we celebrate the birth of the Lutheran Church and the reforming spirit that made it happen. We will not have Sunday School that day, and instead will host all-ages activities in the Fellowship Hall. At the 10:30 service, we will celebrate our 9th Grade Confirmands, who will be affirming their faith.

Lydia's Ordination

Attention all Cub Foods Shoppers!

Cub Foods is having a promotion right now until November 12th in which you receive a stamp for every $10 you spend. When you collect enough stamps, you can earn Kitchen Aid pans. We are collecting those stamps with the goal of purchasing pans to donate to Esperanza United, an organization that works to resettle and support women fleeing domestic violence. Esperanza has a long list of supplies that will help abuse survivors set up a new home. Bring stamps to church, and drop them in the basket on the Welcome Center. Thank you!

Seniors & Friends

Our next Seniors and Friends event will be Tuesday, November 14th at 11:00am. We will start with a worship service, then share a Thanksgiving meal together in the

Ministry Center. There’s a sign-up sheet in the narthex. The deadline to sign-up is November 5th.

Did You Know Sandhill Cranes Change Colors?

The Cranes were here at church on Tuesday showing off their fall colors and let me get close enough to capture their beauty (picture 1). While at the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge last Sunday, I got to learn all about Cranes and took lots of pictures including pictures 2 & 3 below. It was really cool to see hundreds of them eating in the farm fields. As of October 18th there were 9,401 cranes migrating at the refuge.

Here's some Fun Facts:

  • Cranes are among the oldest living birds on the planet with fossil records placing cranes in Nebraska more than nine million years ago.
  • A pair will create a unison call in order to form a bond.
  • Cranes will lay 1-2 eggs in the spring and their offspring are referred to as colts.
  • Cranes readily eat cultivated foods such as corn, wheat, and sorghum which prepares the cranes for migration. In the spring, their diet is comprised of small mammals, insects, snails, reptiles and amphibians.
  • Height: 4.5-5 ft. ~ Weight: 10-14 lbs. ~ Wingspan: 6 ft.
  • Red, featherless skin on the crown ~ White to pale grey feathers ~ due to preening in iron rich mud, the white to pale grey appearance in the feathers turns to a rusty brownish color in the spring.
  • Sherburne has one of the largest staging area in the fall with up to 14,000 individuals roosting before their migration south as far as Florida.
  • Typically, migrating populations of sandhill cranes can be seen from mid-September to mid-November.

Now you know a little something about Sandhill Cranes. Brenda Ericson

Upkeeping St. Barnabas

Karl Smith and Jeff Carter have been busy this week changing light bulbs, cleaning light fixtures and putting back the shades that had fallen in the Ministry Center. Karl also helped Gary Boehler repair the shed by installing new boards. When the rain clears up Gary will finish painting it. Great work guys!

JustGifts Market

December 2nd & 3rd

The JustGifts Market Committee is gearing up for our 20th Anniversary! Please help us celebrate by visiting the market Dec. 2nd & 3rd! If you're new to St. Barnabas, the JustGifts Market is an alternative Christmas market where shoppers are able to buy a variety of handmade and fairtrade items, and/or donate to charities in lieu of a physical gift for anyone on your list who's hard to shop for!

Calling All Crafters & Artists!  Artists and crafters, as you work on your handmade projects this fall, please keep the market in mind! 100% of the sale of donated items goes to the charities featured at the market. Past items include sewn/crocheted/knitted items for adults and babies, jewelry, kitchen items, home decor, Christmas decorations, packaged food items, paper goods, cards, visual art, glass, woodworking, and flower arrangements.

Please bring items to the church office by Monday, November 27. Contact Jessica Gaedke at [email protected] with questions.

Mason Jars Needed

Clint and Audrey Faust will be canning beet pickles again this year and are in need of empty mason jars. If you would like to donate jars, you can bring them to church and place them on the kitchen counter. Thank you.

Volunteer Opportunities

Ministry Teams Volunteers

Are you looking for a place to plug-in at St. Barnabas? Would you like to serve in worship? We are always looking to add volunteers to all of our ministry teams, but we are especially looking to fill two new roles we’ve created:

Acolytes light the candles during the prelude and extinguish them during the postlude. They also hand the offering plates to ushers and collect them after the offering, and help if needed during communion.

Sound Technicians turn on the sound system, ensure that worship leaders have microphones and batteries are fresh, and adjust volume levels during worship, if necessary. It’s not nearly as technical as the name would lead you to believe!

Talk to Pastor Stephanie with questions or to volunteer!
