Dear Shawnee UMC Family,
Please join us for Worship
this Sunday
in-person or on Facebook Live at 10:30am.
The Scripture for Pastor Changsu's message will be:
John 6: 32- 35
32 Then Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ 34 They said to him, ‘Sir, give us this bread always.’
35 Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

The Tuesday Lectionary Group invites you to share some of your favorite scriptures, which we will then share with all members.

Here are this week's scriptures for study and meditation:
Ezra 3:10-13 When the builders laid the foundation of the Lord's temple, the priests in their vests and carrying their trumpets, and the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, arose to praise the Lord according to the direction of Israel's King David. They praised and gave thanks to the Lord, singing responsively, "He is good, his graciousness for Israel lasts forever." All of the people shouted with praise to the Lord because the foundation of the Lord's house had been laid. But many of the older priests and Levites and heads of families, who had seen the first house, wept aloud when they saw the foundation of this house, although many others shouted loudly with joy. No one could distinguish the sound of the joyful shout from the sound of the people's weeping, because the people rejoiced very loudly. The sound was heard at a great distance.
Revelation 7:13-17 Then one of the elders said to me, "Who are these people wearing white robes and where did they come from?" I said to him, "Sir, you know." Then he said to me, "These people come out of great hardship. They have washed their robes and made them white in the Lamb's blood. This is the reason they are going before God's throne. They worship him day and night in his temple, and the one seated on the throne will shelter them. They won't hunger or thirst any more. No sun or scorching heat will beat down on them, because the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them. He will lead them to springs of life-giving water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."
Matthew 13:47-52 "Again the kingdom of heaven is like a net that people threw into the lake and gathered all kinds of fish. When it was full, they pulled it to the shore, where they sat down and put the good fish together into containers. But the bad fish they threw away. That's the way it will be at the end of the present age. The angels will go out and separate the evil people from the righteous people, and will throw the evil ones into a burning furnace. People there will be weeping and grinding their teeth. Have you understood these things?" Jesus asked. They said to him, "Yes." Then he said to them, "Therefore, every legal expert who has been trained as a disciple for the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings old and new things out of their treasure chest."
Psalm 25:11-15 Please, for the sake of your good name, Lord, forgive my sins, which are many! Where are the ones who honor the Lord? God will teach them which path to take. They will live a good life, and their descendants will possess the land. The Lord counsels those who honor him; he makes his covenant known to them. My eyes are always looking to the Lord because he will free my feet from the net.

We hit our goals!
The 2023 SUMC Pumpkin Patch was a big success again. Our goal of reaching out to the community and making SUMC visible was accomplished! All the weekend events – Unloading, Family Fund Day, Girl Scout Pumpkin Painting, Adopt a Pet, and Trunk or Treat with the Petting Zoo, were well received. Many people stopped by just because the saw us in passing and many who live close by stopped for their first time. Plus, we still have our loyal repeat customers that come every year faithfully.
It was a lot of fun at the patch even with the inclement weather the last week. It all couldn’t have happened without everyone in the church volunteering to man a shift and welcoming our neighbors. I can’t name them all individually but THANK YOU to ALL the shift workers for stepping up when needed!
A special thanks needs to go out to a few volunteers for coordinating the events, creating the handout materials, and creating ads promoting us on Facebook. There is a lot of work involved and they did a fantastic job. A very BIG THANK YOU to Mary McCoy, Charla Nichols, Marianne D’Amato, and Sue Kim for all your efforts behind the scenes. They made SUMC look welcoming to our community! A
For those interested in the numbers – we hit our financial goal of selling over $20,000 in pumpkins. Despite the inclement weather the last week we finished off the month with a total of $20,664 in sales. Not a record year but VERY respectable. At the $20K level we as the church receives 35% of the revenue, plus we received over $1000 in tips and donations over the month. Subtracting expenses, we will net about $6000 that the church can use for mission work.
This is a whole church effort resulting is another successful year, so pat yourselves on the back. Again thanks, and remember the patch opens up again in a short 11 months!
