MEMBER MOMENT
Every Sunday for the past fifteen-or-so years I have included my younger brother in my prayers during our worship service. He lived homeless in the Minneapolis area until five years ago when he was able to secure a healthy living arrangement. Roughly ten years ago he had told the other four of us siblings that he did not want to have contact with us. Each of us has struggled with this as honoring his wish enforces the separation, and we’ve had no way to know how he’s doing or if he’s continued to live in the secure housing.
Two weeks ago my oldest sister - Sylvia, visiting from Montana, decided she had to “look over” the building where our brother lives, so she and my brother-in-law drove to the neighborhood and parked near the apartment building. As she walked toward it she met another woman who said “I’ve just seen a beautiful blue butterfly!” A conversation ensued about how unusual that is and about the attractive gardens surrounding the building, and Sylvia asked the woman if she lived there. When she replied that she did Sylvia, giving our brother’s name, asked if she knew him. She didn’t but said “You should come in with me and ask at the front desk if they can help you.”
Now Sylvia had earlier learned from the administrator of this facility that they could not give out names of residents. However she, through clever questioning, ended by getting the confirmation she was after (ah, my sister…) So she “played that card”, and the woman at the desk confirmed again that he was still in residence, that, though a bit shy, he was friendly and well-liked in the building. She said, too, that he enjoyed bike riding; “In fact, you’re in luck, because I see he’s just leaving now with his bike!”
Sylvia followed him out and quietly called his name. He turned and looked at her, his face showing confusion, not recognizing her. She said her name, and his demeanor changed. Sylvia said they talked only for a short time, and she purposely asked no questions of him. And he reiterated his need for the separation as being what is best for him, and that he is in a good place.
Sylvia called shortly after that to relate this experience. We agreed that, while we know no details of his existence, simply to know that he is healthy and seemingly content is enough. Interesting, isn’t it, how prayers are answered in myriad ways! In this case it’s inescapable that the whole encounter turned on a razor-thin edge of timing and the patience to listen to another’s experience of seeing a beautiful blue butterfly!

A PRAYER ON FATHER'S DAY
Loving God, look gently upon fathers of newborn and young children, give them energy, patience and happiness in these fleeting days of long nights, diapers too numerous to count and loading cars with strollers.
Bless dads, who are raising school aged children and teenagers, dads who coach teams and stay up late helping with homework, show them joy in in the moments that seem both hard and wonderful all at the same time.
Bless dads who watch their adult children live their own lives; give these fathers perspective and wisdom.
Healing God, comfort all people who mourn the absence of their father today from death or illness or because of broken relationships. Comfort those who had hoped to be fathers but have been unable to do so and embrace those who long to be dads.
Ever present God, hold up those fathers who mourn the loss of their own children or grieve over their broken relationships with their children.
Beloved Jesus, Son of God, help us to recognize all the men who have guided us and loved us like fathers, men who send a Light forth as an example of the Light you shine upon all of your beloved children.
Bless us and keep us today in Your light. In your name we pray. Amen.

Online Diocesan Convention on November 19
The Standing Committee, in consultation with Bishop-elect Paula Clark, has determined that the 2022 Diocesan Convention will be held online on November 19.
“We are looking forward to a large, joyful consecration and gathering on September 17 to celebrate Bishop-elect Paula. With the amount of diocesan and staff resources necessary to host the consecration, we have decided that it is necessary to have Diocesan Convention virtually this year,” said Standing Committee President Anne Jolly. “While we always prefer to gather together in person, the joy of the consecration will carry us forward as we utilize the experiences of the past few years to have another effective online convention.”
The diocese held successful online diocesan conventions on Zoom in 2020 and 2021. As diocesan bishop, Clark will chair the 2022 convention.
More information about the 185th Annual Convention, including calls for nominations, resolutions, registration and certification of delegates, will be published later this summer.
