News from the Department of Internal Medicine - July 2022

Debra Romberger, MD, Chair of Internal Medicine, shares a department message with important updates for all faculty and staff.

Dr. Mannon honored nationally for clinical transplantation
For her contributions to clinical transplantation, UNMC’s Roslyn Mannon, MD, has received the American Society of Transplantation’s Senior Achievement Award in Clinical Transplantation.

A clinician-scientist, Dr. Mannon is professor of pathology and microbiology, associate chief of research in the division of nephrology, and the vice chair of research at UNMC.

"I am honored to be selected for this prestigious award in recognition of my efforts not only in patient care but scholarly and advocacy contributions," Dr. Mannon said. "Improving patient outcomes and access to transplantation is an important mantra in my career, and I want to thank my many patients for inspiring me to achieve this goal."

In making the announcement, the American Society of Transplantation said Dr. Mannon has been instrumental in improving the clinical care of transplant patients and a leading voice in shaping the advancement and integration of many diverse activities in the field of transplantation. She has held key leadership positions both nationally and in her own institutions. These roles have had a demonstrable impact on the field, influencing national transplant policy, increasing the breadth and effectiveness of public-private partnerships, generating new knowledge in basic science related to alloimmunity and graft dysfunction, and integrating translational and clinical research into improving patient outcomes.

This week, Dr. Mannon also received an award for top basic science paper for the American Journal of Transplantation, the journal of the AST and American Society of Transplant Surgeons.

Dr. Mannon joined the American Society of Transplantation in 1995 and has served in many leadership roles, culminating in her AST Presidency in 2012-13 and ongoing today. As AST president, Dr. Mannon worked with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to create a novel public-private partnership on transplant therapeutics. The work initiated a long-term project that eventually led to creation of the Transplant Therapeutics Consortium with the Critical Path Institute. As AST president, Dr. Mannon also embraced the opportunity to begin to address issues of disparity and equity for female transplant professionals, work that she continues in her current role as chair of the women in transplantation initiative of The Transplantation Society.

UNMC part of $450 million COVID research study
by Vicky Cerino, UNMC strategic communications

UNMC is part of an almost $450 million, four-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to study up to 20,000 adults and children to better understand the full scope of post-COVID symptoms with the goal of improving treatment and health outcomes.

Some of the questions to be asked by NIH’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute RECOVER (Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery) research study include how many Americans have long-term effects from COVID, what their symptoms are and how the effects occur in the body.

Andrew Vasey, MD is co-principal investigator for this study.

Latest COVID treatment study finds superior treatment
by Vicky Cerino, UNMC strategic communications

For more than two years, scientists have been working around the clock to find ways to prevent severe illness and deaths from COVID-19.
A recent international study, co-led by UNMC physician/scientist Andre Kalil, MD, compared the effectiveness of two different drugs being used to treat COVID. Results of the study were recently published in The Lancet journal.

The study compared the combination of baricitinib plus remdesivir versus dexamethasone plus remdesivir in preventing progression to mechanical ventilation or death in hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

Dr. Kalil said in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 requiring supplemental oxygen, high-flow or non-invasive ventilation, baricitinib plus remdesivir and dexamethasone plus remdesivir resulted in similar mechanical ventilation-free survival by day 29.

Resident's composition premiered at May concert
by Lisa Spellman, UNMC strategic communications

On May 11, the Nebraska Medical Orchestra debuted a new musical composition written by one of its own.
"Distant Reality" is a tribute to health care workers composed by first-year internal medicine resident Nick Yeutter, MD

Dr. Yeutter, who has a master’s degree in music composition from New York University and plays clarinet in the orchestra, wanted to recognize health care workers through a musical composition.

"This has been an unprecedented time," said Dr. Yeutter. "'Distant Reality' is the best way I could recognize those frontline workers. It was also a great opportunity to bridge my two lifelong passions and careers: medicine and music."

As a fourth-year medical student in the beginning of the pandemic and later as a resident, Dr. Yeutter saw firsthand the utter fatigue and exhaustion of health care workers.

Civic Engagement Meets Patient Care

With midterm elections approaching in November, it is important for us to encourage our colleagues and patients to vote. Vot-ER badges are a way for physicians to integrate civic engagement into their practice. Patients scan the badge's QR code to access a non-partisan platform where they can register, request a mail-in ballot, and learn about upcoming elections. Vot-ER badges are free to all health care professionals. Request one online and have it mailed to you at no cost at https://vot-er.org/
Addressing Bias and Racism at an Academic Teaching Center

In academic centers, patients are often affected by negative biases from physicians, other health professionals and staff, and students and trainees. Racial, sexual identity, and religious biases can impact decision-making and patient outcomes. In this article, Quinn Capers IV, MD, David A. Bond, MD, and Uday S. Nori, MD present four cases of explicit and implicit bias that impact patient care. The authors then propose “bias and racism rounds” in teaching hospitals, in which real patient interactions are reviewed critically to identify opportunities to reduce bias and racism and improve patient outcomes and experiences. Read to learn how to incorporate addressing racism and biases into trainee curriculum.
Utilizing Pronouns to Foster Inclusivity in the Medical Field

Studies have shown that members of the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly transgender and gender expansive patients, are less likely to seek health care or establish with a primary care provider due to fear of discrimination. During Pride month, we reflect on the steps we can take to help this community feel welcomed in healthcare settings. One such step is utilizing a patient’s pronouns and correct name and updating the EMR to reflect these along with any gender-affirming care a patient has received. A team comprised of medical students Heng Jiang, Kalika Mahato, Jonathan Wood, and Kayley Anderson; Med-Peds resident Natasha Gallett; and IM Faculty Arthur Kornitsky developed a module titled “Creating a Welcoming Healthcare Environment for the Transgender and Gender Expansive Community.” This module demonstrates two examples of a non-binary patient seeking care for a common complaint, abdominal pain. Watch to see how medical staff can facilitate an inclusive visit for LGBTQIA+ patients. View the module here
Med center turns out strong and proud for parade
by John Keenan, UNMC strategic communications

UNMC and Nebraska Medicine came out in force for the July 16 Heartland Pride Parade.
Organizers estimated that about 150 people from the med center marched in the annual event. Kari Zelenka, organizational excellence lead at Nebraska Medicine and president of the UNMC & Nebraska Medicine LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance, said she believed it was the most participation ever from the med center.

"We were very pleased with the turnout," she said.

Faculty Education
We find ourselves in several different places and serving different roles in medical education. You might be an educator during rounds, a mentor/researcher during your office hours, a creator while crafting a learning experience, and a medical doctor while working with patients. Having access to your work while on the go without having to manage every single file is critical to maximizing your work time while minimizing the effort it takes to maintain it. We need our technology to work for us and not the other way around.

Our Instructional Designer, Zach, collaborated with Dr. Andrea Zimmer, to build a module with the goal of showing you how to make Microsoft OneDrive and Microsoft Teams work for you. Allowing you access to all your files anywhere you have internet access and on most, if not all, smart devices. Saving you a ton of energy and effort and even helping you manage larger groups along with smaller projects

Remember login information is simply your UNMC credentials.
