FNCE 3336 Real Estate a Practical Approach
The beginning of the semester brought the fall class of the Barings-sponsored "Real Estate: A Practical Approach" course. The cap stone class has run for the last 4 years and now has an official FNCE 3336 number.  The class, a favorite among the real estate students, is taught by Dave Reilly, former CEO of Cornerstone Realty Advisers, now known as Barings.

The students also have the opportunity to hear from speakers and professionals from Barings and other real estate firms.   In recent weeks James Clayton of Barings Research spoke to students regarding the difference between stocks and bonds and real estate as an asset class. Barings' Marty Kane lectured on the importance of Due Diligence and the many considerations that go into that process.

The class is  advanced in nature and covers the nuts and bolts of a real estate transaction and brings the  students from the proforma through the rigors of real estate financing.  The students work through case studies to determine viability and internal rate of return, eventually pitching and defending or rejecting the deal.

The semester promises to be enlightening and challenging as the class digs deeper into all things real estate.
2017-2018 Real Estate Society Officers

Serving as 2017-2018 Real Estate Society Officers from left to right are as follows: Treasurer, Kyle Ernest '18; President, Kelly Yates '18; Co-VP, Katie Lynch '18; Secretary, Caci Rhuda '19; and Co-VP, Jordan Angel '18.
We appreciate all our students that serve in some capacity.
Summer 2017 Internship Highlights

Tim Tedford (Real Estate Finance '17) spent his summer as a Real Estate Investment Intern at Cigna Investment Management (CIM) in Bloomfield, CT. CIM manages assets exclusively for Cigna's domestic insurance portfolios and pension plan by leveraging expertise in public securities, private placements, real estate, and alternative investments to deliver superior returns.

Over the course of the summer, Tim reviewed Cigna Realty Investor's process for estimating the value of lease intangibles, analyzed commercial mortgage investments, and traveled with the group to Boston to meet with investment partners and tour properties. CIM connected Tim with a diverse group of investors that taught him invaluable soft and technical skills. Tim will be pursuing a career in real estate upon graduation this December.

2017 Student Placement
Another academic year has started and we have another fine group of real estate majors and/or minors and concentrations.  The Center for Real Estate and Urban Economic Studies is in the process of assembling resumes of internship candidates and graduating majors in Real Estate as well as other allied disciplines.  Real estate students have or are in the process of completing what many consider to be one of the best academic real estate programs in the country.

The Center offers a Resume Book accessible online. You are welcome to register your company's profile on the system. Upon completion, you will receive an email confirming your registration. For more information about the process, please call Debbie Philips at (860) 486-3227 or email your request to recenter@business.uconn.edu.
