Travel safely when adjusting to time change

It’s time to “fall back” this Sunday, and even though we will be gaining an hour, some people may feel tired. Stay alert and stay safe as you travel.

Don’t drive or bike if you feel drowsy. Prevent crashes by slowing down and increasing following distance between vehicles.

It will get darker earlier, and visibility may be impacted during your evening commute. Be alert for pedestrians, bicyclists or vehicles that may be hard to see.

Use headlights and bicycle lights to see and be seen. Pedestrians and bicyclists should wear bright and reflective clothing.

Reminder: Clean storm drains to prevent flooding

Leaves are falling and there's rain in the forecast. Make sure to clean leaves and other debris from storm drains to prevent water from ponding.

When removing debris from drains, follow these tips:

  • Clear drains before rains begin whenever possible.
  • Do not use your hands to remove debris. Use a shovel, broom or rake.
  • Make sure you wear gloves to protect your hands.
  • Wear reflective clothes so drivers can see you.
  • Remove debris within 10 feet of drain along the curbs.
  • Bag all organic material (leaves, grasses, etc.) and place it in a yard-waste container. Trash and other non-organic debris should be bagged and placed in garbage bins.
  • NEVER lift a storm drain grate.
  • If a storm drain remains clogged even after cleaning, contact Clean Water Services at 503-547-8100.
