Saludos,

We are humbled by the overwhelming support for relief and recovery efforts for the grassroots and frontline efforts we support and represent such as Solar Jibaro and EcoKit Puerto Rico.

Last week, we raised nearly 15K in AbrazArte: an Arts benefit for Puerto Rico at Teatro LaTEA. In the same week, we hosted the opening of  Fantasy Island, which has made waves across the nation for its critical interrogation of socio-political conditions on the Island. We are grateful to host Puerto Rican artists in the diaspora.

We are pleased to bring our community  further opportunities to engage in these difficult and critical times as best we know how: through art, culture and collaborative innovation. Below you will find an extension of the AbrazArte benefit with an online auction and  further related programming throughout the month

We are also honored to be hosting the legendary Victor Hernandez-Cruz, the  distinguished member of the famed  Nuyorican  school of poets making a visit to his good ole Loisaida neighborhood.

In Solidarity,

Loisaida Team

Last Thursday we hosted a successful opening of Fantasy Island, with performances from the artists Shey Rivera and Huascar Robles.

The installation explores how tourism and consumer culture sell a "fantastical" luxury lifestyle, a tropical paradise twisting crisis into "opportunity".  On view until November 18th.

Forthcoming programming for Fantasy Island includes a  Panel Discussion with Shey Rivera, Huascar Robles, Ed Morales, and F Javier Torres on Saturday, October 21st.

This panel discussion will focus on the role of the arts in community development, the economic crisis in Puerto Rico, its implications and parallels with other cities/countries, tourism economy, real estate development, and disaster capitalism.

The AbrazArte Arts Benefit for Puerto raised nearly 15K to the grassroots and frontline relief and recovery efforts, with funds directed to:  Donate Puerto Rico  and to support Loisaida's  eco-smart relief efforts to empower folks in the island about their choices regarding renewables such as Eco Kit Puerto Rico and the Solar Jibaro initiative currently in research and development stage.

Building on the success of the art auction the day of the event, and the overwhelming support from artists, we are continuing the auction online on our website here. The online version features new contributions by established and emerging Latinx artists, and artists in solidarity with the people of Puerto Rico and the diaspora.

Bids are open between now and and Sunday, October 22nd.

AbrazArte is organized in collaboration with The Loisaida, Inc. Center and Teatro LaTEA.

Friday, October 20th at 7:00pm the Center will host an inaugural event in which we will hear from Jorge Díaz Ortiz, Founder and Artistic Director of AgitArte, about the grassroots mutual aid, brigades, and collective kitchens that have emerged throughout Puerto Rico to address the immediate needs of the people that are not being met by any other means.

Victor Hernandez Cruz
Urayoan Noel
and Edwin Torres

This event is a reading, performance, and discussion among three Puerto Rican luminaries, celebrating the publication of Hernandez' new book, "Beneath The Spanish" (Coffee House Press). It will take place at our Center on  Wednesday, October 25th at 6:30pm

ABOUT THE BOOK

Beneath the Spanish is history, the clash and melt of cultures, the conquest of the New World, colonialism, bilingualism, fragmentation, and cubism. Poems built of tobacco, sugar, café; Spanish, Arabic, English; José Martí, Federico García Lorca, and William Carlos Williams. A history and exploration of Hernández Cruz's Caribbean roots as well as a documentation of and counterpoint to the origin of the European cultural intrusion into the New World, Beneath the Spanish deconstructs and reconstructs a wounded history, offering a prayer for communication between distances, oceans, music, dance, and mountains, revealing the past in the present moment we live.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

VICTOR HERNANDEZ CRUZ is the author of several collections of poetry including, most recently, The Mountain in the Sea and In the Shadow of AlAndalus. Featured in Bill Moyers's Language of Life series, Cruz's collection Maraca was a finalist for the Lenore Marshall and Griffin Poetry Prizes. He divides his time between Morocco and his native Puerto Rico.
