“We are excited to bring a Bloody Mary bar and Mimosa bar to the T&A for the first time ever,” explains event organizer Christy Rose. “We will have a large assortment of items that you can add to your Bloody Mary. It will be set up so the customers can use a skewer stick to add as many items as they can fit. For the Mimosa bar we plan to have a variety of juices and fresh fruits to add to their Mimosas. We also have some fun treats that can be added to their Mimosas. It will be a special day to honor all mothers and to remember our matriarch, Carmela Surian, who kept the T&A alive for 67 years."
The Surian family has proudly owned and operated the T&A Cocktail Lounge and Restaurant since 1946 and Christy recounts the history of the business.
“Seventy-eight years ago Frank Tonin ‘Toni’ and Al Surian had a vision to build a bar business. Shortly after that Toni passed away. Al and his wife, Carmela, bought the business from Toni’s widow and continued to run the business. Their son, Gino, has been involved in the business since he was a young boy and now he is going to retire.”
You are invited to come celebrate the longest owned and operated family business in Susanville and send Gino into retirement in style.
Here is a schedule of events.

We asked Gino Surian was asked about his lifelong commitment to the family business this is what he said.
“I was only 11 years old when my dad passed away and my mom did not speak English, because I was the oldest child, I had to help my mom with things pertaining to the business. While I was going to college I would come home on the weekends and work. After I graduated from UNR I returned to Susanville to help her with the business. My mom continued to be a part of the daily operations of the business until she passed away nine years ago.”
“In the past 65 years that I have been involved in the business, I have met a lot of interesting people, from all walks of life. I have met musicians, professional athletes, celebrities, famous people, people from every state and from a lot of different countries. The people I have met have been the best part of my job. I have made a lot of lifetime friends and have a lot of acquaintances from the bar. Many out-of-towners come back year after year to stop in and catch up as they travel through Susanville.”
Gino is looking forward to retirement and he says, “I haven’t had a lot of time to think about what I will do but I look forward to having more time with family, especially my great-grandchildren and my wife. We will do some traveling and I am sure I will pick up a few hobbies to keep me busy.”
He closed with, “I cannot thank the community enough for supporting my family for seventy-eight years. We would not have been in business this long without the support of the community.”

Chico State and LCC Sign Agreement to Support Transfer Student Success
Chico State and seven community colleges came together April 29th, 2024, in an incredible demonstration of solidarity to support the educational dreams of transfer students from across the North State region.
President Steve Perez and leadership from Butte College, College of the Siskiyous, Feather River College, Lassen Community College, Shasta College, Woodland Community College and Yuba College signed Memoranda of Understanding to formalize dual admission and streamlined transfer for students interested in pursuing their bachelor’s degree at Chico State.
This guaranteed admission and accompanying support mechanisms lay the groundwork to simplify and ease transfer students’ pathways to pursue four-year degrees, credentials, and further education within their region.
The benefits of the collaboration include that Chico State guarantees admission to students from those seven colleges as long as they meet minimum eligibility requirements and apply by published deadlines; Chico State will extend a dual admission program invitation through the Transfer Success Pathway to eligible first-time, first-year applicants at the end of their high school career after being denied admission; that each college will establish a mechanism for early identification of students who are interested in transferring and schedule a Chico State campus tour for those students; and that Chico State educational opportunities will be promoted at the individual community college campuses.
Carie Camacho, Interim Superintendent/President, Lassen Community College stated “We’re very excited to continue our partnership, with the addition of guaranteed admission. It truly will be lifesaving for the students of our small town. This is a perfect university for them. It’s two hours away, but they are just a short car drive when they want to visit home.”

Big Turnout for City of Susanville and Lassen Land and Trails Trust Cleanup Day
Photos and story by
Ruth McElrath
More than thirty people of all ages participated in the Susan River Trail Cleanup last Saturday, a collaborative effort between the City of Susanville and Lassen Land and Trails Trust.
In a written statement, Lassen Land and Trails Trust Vice President Liz Norton, said, “The Susan River is a gem in our community. Now it really sparkles thanks to the City, and all our sponsors and volunteers who cleaned up 42 cubic yards of trash along the river. That’s impressive!”
The event was held on Celebrate Trails Day, an annual event started by the Rails to Trails Conservancy to celebrate America’s Trails.
Local businesses also contributed to the event’s success. C & S Waste Solutions donated two roll off bins; Susanville IGA provided snacks and water; and staff from the City Public Works Department drove backhoes along the trail to collect the accumulated trash the volunteers removed.

Interior of Roosevelt Pool in 1938 – Rotary Magazine
$1,500 More Needed To Complete Pool
May 2, 1937
Frank C. O’Kelly, who is in charge of the local swimming pool project, announced today that the pool fund of $5,000 is exhausted and approximately $1500 more is needed to complete the pool so that it may be open for the public on June 15.
Due to the fact that the WPA has invested $17,000 and the elementary school district $5,000, he said, it is now up to the service clubs to furnish enough money to keep the ball rolling until July 1, when the school board will apportion more funds for this project.
Monday evening the Business and Professional Women’s club agreed to sell $100 worth of season swimming tickets to the public. The 20-30 club and the Rotary club will also agree to do their share to contribute to this fund.
Professor Frank S. Cralle, vice president of the Susanville elementary school and in charge of the Roosevelt school where the pool is located, will be the pool manager. The pool if 45 feet wide, 105 feet long, with a depth of nine and one half feet at one end. Springboards and all swimming equipment will be ready for the opening June 15 if the necessary funds are raised.
The pool is equipped with underwater lighting.
The pool representatives from each service club will attend a meeting of the school board Thursday night when process of season tickets, individual swim prices, types of swimming suits and other topics will be discussed.
