AAI Submits Comments to EPA Regarding Herbicide Strategy | |
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a draft Herbicide Strategy to protect endangered species from herbicides. The strategy includes requiring mitigation measures to reduce drift and runoff of herbicides that could affect non-target species.
AAI submitted public comments to warn EPA of unintended consequences of proposed mitigations that would make herbicide use more costly and less practical and effective. Herbicides are not only important for crop production but are critical for conservation practices like cover crops and reduced tillage. The proposed mitigations could also increase weed resistance to herbicides by limiting rates and modes of action. AAI will continue to engage with EPA to maintain access to herbicides.

High School Pollinator Habitat Grants | |
The following information comes from the Sand County Foundation which is looking for partners for their Pollinator Habitat Grant Program. Many agribusinesses may have land that would be suitable for this project. Additionally, this may be an opportunity to reach out to a school in your community.
Do you want to improve wildlife habitat AND provide a hands-on learning opportunity to high school students? Sand County Foundation is looking for landowners to partner with high school agriculture and science teachers by offering host sites for pollinator habitat projects.
Through Sand County Foundation’s Pollinator Habitat Grant Program, students grow native plants in greenhouses and then transplant them to nooks and crannies within the agricultural landscape. Teachers apply for the grants. Landowners provide teachers access to a small portion of land for students to seed native grasses and transplant native wildflowers to benefit pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and grassland birds. Project sites can range from 2500 square feet to a few acres in size. Landowners must assist in site preparation and maintenance to ensure success of the seeding and transplanting.
Interested? Sand County Foundation encourages you to contact educators in your community to offer your land as a potential project site! Teachers must submit proposals by November 17, 2023. This is a great opportunity for FFA alumni or any farmer or landowner with an affinity for wildlife habitat and youth education. You can help provide a memorable educational experience for students as they consider future careers in agriculture and resource conservation.

November Elections: Early Voting Has Started, Absentee Ballot Requests Due Oct. 23 | |
Elections for school boards, city councils, and other local offices are coming next month. The deadline to request absentee ballots is Monday, October 23. Additionally, early voting begins on October 18 at county auditor offices and designated satellite locations.

China has approved dozens of genetically modified corn and soybean seed varieties for planting, in a breakthrough move that could eventually boost production and reduce dependence on foreign supplies.
The country is the world’s top importer of soybeans and corn. Large-scale marketing of GM crops would support the government’s drive for food self-sufficiency and security, a top priority for President Xi Jinping.
A national committee set up by the agriculture ministry has approved 37 GM corn seed and 14 soybean seed varieties, after a preliminary review, the ministry said on Tuesday.
The approved list, including four corn varieties developed by China National Seed Group, a unit of Syngenta Group, and five soybean varieties from Beijing Dabeinong Technology Group, is available for public review until Nov. 15.
Actual planted areas for these seed varieties, after final approval, should be in accordance with relevant government arrangements, according to the notice on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
China started a pilot program for commercial planting of GM corn and soybean crops in 2021 and has expanded the trial to 20 counties in five provinces including major grain producers Hebei and Jilin this year, state media reported, citing an official from the agriculture ministry.

U.S. row-crop harvest continues in full swing. Combines, trucks and grain carts are feasting on the ripe fields and filling bins and outdoor grain piles as quickly as is safely possible.
But, while the corn crop is large this year, the total has fallen off a bit from projections in late summer because of a round of dry-and-hot weather during the end of the season.
Late-season heat was most notable in the Western Corn Belt. During the month of September, much of the Western Corn Belt had average temperatures ranging from 4 to 6 degrees Fahrenheit above normal; and the lake country of northern Minnesota saw average temperatures pushing 6 to 8 degrees F above normal. Meanwhile, the majority of the Eastern Corn Belt had temperatures which were near to slightly above normal.
The home-stretch heat dragged corn yield estimates down from numbers posted in August and September. Looking at individual states, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri saw October NASS corn yield estimates which were several bushels per acre (bpa) less than in the previous two months.

Even with the share of renewables in electricity production rising continuously over the past years, oil remains the world's most important energy source when factoring in transport and heating.
The United States consumed 19 million barrels of oil per day, followed by its fiercest economic and political competitor, China, with 14 million barrels per day this past year.
The usage of other countries pales compared to the two superpowers: The rest of the top 8 consumers combined only amounted to two-thirds of the amount used by the U.S. and China.
When looking at the change in oil consumption between 2012 and 2022, the picture changes significantly. U.S. oil usage only increased by about
9%, with China and India emerging as growth leaders with 42% and 41% consumption growth, respectively.

The senior Republican on the Senate Agriculture Committee “is having conversations about an extension” of the 2018 farm law into the new year, said a spokesperson on Wednesday. Farm leaders in Congress have said they intend to enact a new farm bill by late December, but a legislative logjam is growing on Capitol Hill.
“Sen. Boozman is having conversations about an extension with his colleagues and producer groups while continuing to work on a new farm bill that meets the needs of our nation’s farmers and rural communities,” said the spokesperson. Aides to Senate Agriculture Committee chair Debbie Stabenow and House Agriculture Committee chair Glenn Thompson were not immediately available for comment.
“Without a Speaker, we wouldn’t be able to bring an extension of the 2018 farm bill to the floor for consideration by the House even if we wanted to,” said an aide to Georgia Rep. David Scott, the senior Democrat on House Agriculture. The aide said Scott and his staff “come to work every day and engage on writing and negotiating the next farm bill.”
Legislative work in the House has been postponed following the ouster of Rep. Kevin McCarthy, a California Republican, as speaker two weeks ago. Government funding expires on Nov. 17, so the House and Senate will prioritize passing either another short-term spending bill or an agreement to fund federal agencies for the rest of the fiscal year. The farm bill would be sidetracked during that process. Farm bills often require a week or more of floor debate.
