FMEC Members and Friends:

Whether you are joining us in person in Providence, RI or you were unable to be here with us, we hope you appreciate this update on the FMEC Annual Meeting!

FMEC 2023 Annual Meeting kicks off today

For the 39th year, family physicians, residents, medical students and their supporters from the northeast U.S. are gathering for an exciting Annual Meeting. The event kicks off today with preconferences in the morning, educational sessions in the afternoon, a keynote presentation by Dr. Izzy Lowell, and the first night of the Residency Fair. The FMEC is pleased to welcome 300 medical students, nearly 240 residents, almost 390 faculty and other physicians, along with 32 exhibitors and 93 residency programs (a new record!) in the Residency Fair.

Family Medicine: Anchoring Patients and Communities

The 2023 Annual Meeting theme was chosen to recognize family medicine as a stabilizing force, or “anchor,” in healthcare in the United States. The theme also metaphorically honors our conference hosts in the Ocean State. All hands on deck as we set sail for a great Annual Meeting in Providence!

Thanking FMEC Past President Amy Crawford-Faucher, MD

Board members, donors, Host Committee members and others gathered for the FMEC President’s Welcome Reception. One order of business was to formally thank FMEC Past President Dr. Amy Crawford-Faucher, who completed her terms as President-elect, President, and Immediate Past President in 2022.

FMEC Board of Trustees

The FMEC Board of Trustees held its fall in-person meeting. After a moment of silence and some reflection to recognize the conflict happening in the world, they strategized about how the FMEC can better support faculty, residents and others with “pivoting” (career and life changes), advocating for time and funding for development, artificial intelligence, and more. They also spent an in-depth session continuing to plan a new FMEC journal. The FMEC Board has vacancies, including regular members and new positions for a student and resident. Visit Get Involved for more information.

During the Board meeting, we used AI to generate this haiku based on the suggestion “family medicine.” How does that make you feel? How is AI affecting your program?

Healing hands embrace,

Care flows through generations,

Family's wellness.
