From the Curate

A few months ago, I attended the choral Evensong at St. James Cathedral sung by choristers from around the region. The Cathedral’s provost, in her short homily, asked the choristers if they knew the words of the Magnificat. One by one, each shouted out a line, proving her point: that Mary’s words of praise and thanksgiving had been etched in song upon these children’s hearts. My own heart swelled with hope for the future of the church. To know Mary’s song is to know true faithfulness in God and his love for his people.

Some weeks prior, I hadn’t been feeling so hopeful. My own child, Albie, caught me in that moment of despair. “What’s wrong, Mama?” they asked. I was frank: “I’m worried about the church. I’m afraid no one will come to church in 10 years.” Staring straight into my eyes, Albie said to me, “For all you know, everyone will be at church in 10 years.” What happened next is forever etched in my heart. They immediately began to sing the Magnificat. “My soul doth magnify the Looooooooord,” they sang, “and my Spirit hath rejoiced in God my saaaaav-ior.” (It was the Howells Collegium Regale service.) To know Mary’s song is to know true faithfulness in God and his love for his people, even and especially amid despair.

Matthew Milliner, our guest formation presenter two Sundays ago, writes, “[Mary] is both a singular historical woman and a figure of God’s wise and loving intent to save us all.” Her example of faithfulness in God shows us how to bring God’s wisdom and love into the world ourselves. Within the wide breadth of the Anglican tradition, there is much diversity regarding devotion to Mary. I count us blessed that we at Ascension hold such deep reverence for the Blessed Mother. This Sunday, to mark the month of abundant blessings often associated with Mary, we will crown her with flowers and sing hymns in praise and thanksgiving for her faithfulness. We don’t do this in place of our praise and thanksgiving to God but to point to him, the true and living God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and his infinite and abundant love for us.

Food Pantry is Saturday, May 4

We will again gather to assemble bags of shelf-stable groceries and personal items for our neighbors in need. We begin filling bags in St. Michael Hall at 9 a.m. and start distributing them at 11 a.m. We need the most help between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., but welcome your help for however long you are able to stay.

Come be the hands, heart, and feet of Christ in our own neighborhood, following in the wake of the Cross, and enjoy some fellowship as well.

A continuing Blessed Fifty Days of Easter to all!

As organist to the parish, and on behalf of our Rector, I am proud to welcome two wonderful musicians to the bench this week.

  • This Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Jason Roberts, Organist and Director of Music at Blessed Sacrament (RC) parish in New York City and winner of the 2008 American Guild of Organists National Competition in Organ Improvisation will give a master class on organ improvisation.  The event is sponsored by the Chicago AGO chapter, is open to the public, and several organists will play and receive tutoring and encouragement in their efforts.
  • This Sunday at 3:30 p.m. the monthly organ recital preceding Choral Evensong and Benediction will be offered by DrWalter Whitehouse, recently-retired Associate Organist for two decades at Rockefeller Chapel of the University of Chicago. Dr. Whitehouse has been associated with many Chicago-area parishes, and is a nationally-known recitalist.

All are welcome to attend these two special musical events this weekend, as well as, of course, Evensong and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, with the Full Ascension Choir, at 4 p.m.this Sunday afternoon.

Solemn High Mass, May Crowning & Blessing of Rosaries

The month of May is dedicated to Mary, Queen of Heaven and Mother to all the faithful. Following both the 9 a.m. & 11a.m. Masses, parishioners are invited to come to the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mary for the Blessing of Rosaries. You may bring your own Rosary or receive a Rosary provided by the Society of Mary for your use and devotion.

The Society of Mary of the Church of Ascension is dedicated to the glory of God in love and honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Rosary is said after the Solemn High Mass on the second Sunday of each month.

Young(ish) Adults Gathering, Sunday, May 5

The Prayers of the People

As part of our Sunday offering of the Mass, we bring to God our petitions and thanksgivings. As a community, we do this by bidding the parish’s intentions in the Prayers of the People. If you wish to have someone added to the Prayers of the People, please email Father de la Torre or Mother Murphy-Gill. You can also fill out the prayer request form in the link below. Names will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, unless otherwise requested.

Lord, hear the prayers of thy people; and what we have asked faithfully, grant that we may obtain effectually, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
