e-Pistle for Sunday, April 28, 2024

Dear Katharine,

This Sunday I will be preaching on the theme of "abiding" in Christ. In preparation for the sermon, I invite you to think about those occasions and places where you feel closest to God. Do you see a pattern emerging? Also, when does God feel farthest away?

Bargain Haul

Bargain Haul is about to kick off officially with drop-off this Sunday from 11:30am to 3:00pm. It has been customary for Rite-13, the confirmation class, and youth group to help carry the donations from cars into the church and even into the assigned room. However, anyone who would like to help out is warmly welcome to do so. Please come along, wearing sensible and comfortable shoes, and enjoy some fun fellowship, pizza, and a low impact workout. I look forward to working alongside you!

Photo Directory

Please see the announcements below about Realm and the effort to produce a photo directory for the parish. The photos do not need to be professional headshots - selfies are welcome!! They can be a photo you happen to like that is in your photos in your phone. We hope you will also submit a family photo to Kate so she can upload it for the directory. Please see more details below.

Yours in Christ, Sarah

Icon of the Week

Johann Sebastian Bach

March 31, 1685 to July 28, 1750

Johann Sebastian Bach was the youngest of eight children born into a large family of German organists and musicians. Admired by his contemporaries as an outstanding harpsichordist and organist, he is also considered one of the greatest composers in the history of western music. He held several musical posts across Germany: Director of Music to Leopold, Prince of Anhalt-Kothen; Cantor of the Thomasschule in Leipzig; and Royal Court Composer to August III. He had 19 children with two wives, only nine of whom lived to adulthood.

Bach has been called the “Fifth Evangelist” so effectively as he proclaimed the mystery of Christ in the language of art. His work has nourished the spiritual lives of millions, regardless of culture, language, or creed. Bach’s

compositions include the Brandenburg concertos, the Mass in B minor, The Well-Tempered Clavier (harpsicord), two Passions, keyboard works, and more than 300 cantatas. A devout Lutheran, he represents the mystical side of Protestantism—those who move beyond moral teachings and the printed word, to encounter the living Word, face-to-face.

His feast day is July 28.

Almighty God, beautiful in majesty and majestic in holiness, who teaches us in Holy Scripture to sing your praises and who gave your musicians Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frederic Handel, and Henry Purcell grace to show forth your glory in their music: Be with all those who write or make music for your people, that we on earth may glimpse your beauty and know the inexhaustible riches of your new creation in Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Photos for Parish Directory

We are working in Realm on our parish photo directory. We need photographs of each parishioner as well as each family unit. We encourage you to add your own individual photos, but you will have to send the family photo to Kate. NOTE: the family photo will print in the directory, the individual photo will appear when other parishioners look you up in Realm Connect. There are additional instructions in the Realm Connect news feed for assistance (see below announcement). If you would prefer, we can facilitate all your photo upload, just send your photographs to Kate@standrewswellesley.org

Realm Account Reminder

Realm is our database and our online directory. All our parishioners are there, and pictures of families and individuals are being uploaded! Over the last program year, you will have received a few email invitations to join the online directory. They came from "St Andrew’s Episcopal Church notifications@onrealmmail.org"  Please look in your spam or junk mail for the email if you cannot find it easily.

If you have not registered for an account with Realm, please ask Kate for help. I can send you a reminder invitation. There is also an app for your phone called Realm Connect. Look for it in the App Store or Google Play Store. kate@standrewswellesley.org

Bake for Bargain Haul Bake Sale

One of the many highlights of Bargain Haul will be the bake sale during the public sale on Saturday, May 4. Shoppers will need fuel (think sugar) to sort through the many wonderful rooms, and we are looking for volunteers to bake their favorite finger food desserts to sell at the bake sale. Popular items include Rice Krispies treats, cookies, brownies, cupcakes, etc. If you are able to bake something, it will be greatly appreciated! Please label your treats “Bake Sale” and drop them off in the St. Andrew’s kitchen on Friday, May 3. (No need to bag anything individually.) Contact Jenny Sawyer

9am Christian Learning

Please join us in the Harvey Room today, April 28, for Understanding the Eucharist, a study from the award-winning book Walk in Love by Gunn and Shobe. This class will be taught by Carrie Hawley. Join us in the parish hall Sunday, May 5, for Just War Theory: A Christian Perspective taught by Alan Henrikson, Professor Emeritus of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. Come for all our classes or just the ones that interest you. Everyone is welcome. There is childcare at 8:55am in Kids’ Place so parents can join. Classes are hybrid and the Zoom link is here. —Rev. Margaret Schwarzer

April Showers Food Drive

We are calling for April Showers of (no, not rain) dried pasta, macaroni and cheese and dried beans! Please add these to your shopping during April and deliver them to St. Andrew's. These will become part of our B-LOVE grocery bags for families at St. Stephen's Youth Programs (SSYP). You don't need me to tell you how the price of groceries is still much higher than in the recent past, and the SSYP families are feeling the pinch. Thank you for your generous donations! Cam McCormick.

Faith in Motion: Walk to End Homelessness

Please join team captain Debbie Osborn and other St. Andrew's walkers on Sunday, May 5, at noon, at Natick High School, for the walk, which benefits our outreach partner Family Promise Metrowest in their efforts to help homeless shelter residents transition into permanent housing. The walk is an easy 2.3 miles in Natick, and you can walk, run, trot, or just sponsor our team. Registration and event details are at Register for the 2024 Walk to End Homelessness or contact Debbie Osborne. Note: The housing crisis in the Boston Metrowest area has become more painful for many more families than ever before, and this is an important fundraiser which will support the work Family Promise does with over 100 families.
