Dear Team DPS,
This year, DPS is excited to celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month! May was designated as Jewish American Heritage Month by Congressional resolution and Presidential proclamation in 2006 as a way to honor and celebrate the contributions of Jewish Americans. It is a time to explore the Jewish experience and achievements of Jewish people and the antisemitism that has been faced by Jewish people throughout history.
The Jewish community contains a variety of ethnicities and nationalities. In fact, the Greater Denver Area Jewish community includes around 90,000 individuals who identify as Jewish through birth, adoption, marriage/partnership and conversion. Some are connected to their Jewish identity through religious faith and practice, while others identify as Jewish through a connection to their heritage and culture.
Celebrating Jewish American Heritage Month in classrooms and schools can help students and families feel seen, heard and valued. In supporting our students, we can foster a sense of pride and belonging among Jewish American individuals and communities while dispelling stereotypes and biases and promoting positive representation.
In collaboration,
Dr. Alex Marrero
Superintendent
