Honors Dr. H. Randolph Bailey

The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) awarded Dr. H. Randolph Bailey with the society’s highest honor by presenting him with the 2022 Masters in Colorectal Surgery Lectureship Award at their annual meeting this year in Tampa, Florida. Dr. Bailey is professor of surgery and emeritus program director of the UT colon and rectal surgery residency training program. Dr. Bailey earned his medical degree from the UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas; completed his internship at Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas; completed his general surgery training at the UTHealth Houston; and did his fellowship training at Ferguson Hospital, Grand Rapids, MI. | |
Cardenas Awarded $1.95 Million NIH Grant |
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) awarded Jessica Cardenas, PhD, Assistant Professor, Division of Acute Care Surgery, an R35 Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award (MIRA) for Early Stage Investigators on August 1, 2022 for her grant entitled “Endothelial regulation of inflammation during trauma and hemorrhagic shock (1-R35-GM-146859-01).” The MIRA program provides consistent and stable support for an investigator’s research, thus allowing more research flexibility, innovation, and productivity. Dr. Cardenas’ project seeks to examine novel roles for endothelial anticoagulant heparan sulfates in regulating inflammation in the critically ill and the award will provide 5 years of funding at a total budget of $1.95 million.

Dr. Phillip Chang Joins Acute Care Surgery | |
Dr. Phillip Chang has joined the Department of Surgery as an Adjust Professor in the Division of Acute Care Surgery. Memorial Hermann Health System has recently named him as their Senior Vice President and Chief Medical and Quality Officer. Dr. Chang trained as a trauma and general surgeon, and dedicated many years to operating room leadership. Dr. Chang earned his medical degree at Eastern Virginia Medical School and a Master of Business Administration from Gatton College of Economics and Business in Lexington, Ky. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va.

Raychell Watson, Education Coordinator III, joined the Department of Surgery in the Acute Care Surgery Division in early July, 2022. She will serve as the Clerkship Program Coordinator for our students. Raychell comes to us from the University of Houston College of Medicine where she performed the same role in the Office of Medical Education. She has worked with various groups of students for the past 11 years in Houston, San Antonio and Louisiana. Raychell has already shared many ideas and suggestions. We welcome her and the knowledge she brings to the role. We are excited to have her on our team and look forward to lots of success.

Tayna Vazquez, Program Manager has joined the Department of Surgery in the Division of Elective General Surgery. She will serve as the Program Manager to the MIST Fellowship program as well as the assistant to Dr. Erik Wilson. Tayna comes to us from UTMB Galveston where she spent the past 15 years. Her role with UTMB was as a Community Engagement Specialist with the Department of Pediatrics in the Chairman’s office. Tayna has a background in project management, marketing and outreach.

Channing Winters, Executive Assistant has joined the Department of Surgery in the Division of Acute Care Surgery. She will serve as support for Drs Kao, Khan, Albarado, Puzio, and McNutt. She will also contribute her support as the ACS / Trauma Fellowship Coordinator. She comes to us from Memorial Hermann Hospital where she spent the past 10 years as an Administrative Assistant in the Neonatal ICU and Emergency Department.
