New Collection: Hornell Yearbooks

In 2018, Hornell Public Library's Marie Dunn scanned their collection of yearbooks and hosted them in a Google Drive. They were publicly available, but not very discoverable. Library director Denise Chilson let us copy the PDFs and add them to NYHeritage.org, where they'll have a wider audience and join lots of other popular yearbook collections. If you have material already digitized, send me a copy!

New Collection: Broome County Poor Farm

The Broome County Poor Farm in Dickinson was in use from 1833 through the 1960s. These photos from the Broome County Historical Society show the campus and workers of this institution, which had rigid rules of behavior and requirements for its sick, disabled, widowed, and orphaned inmates.

New Collections: Images of Sennett & Images of Springport

These two new collections from the Cayuga County Historian's Office show some of the more rural areas of Cayuga County. Sennett is a town just east of Auburn. Springport includes the village of Union Springs and was once the home of Gwau-gwah, a principal village of the Cayuga nation until it was destroyed during the Clinton-Sullivan campaign of 1779.

New Collection: Mills of Waterloo

Thanks to the Waterloo Library & Historical Society for this photograph collection of the many mills in Waterloo, including the Waterloo Wool Manufacturing Company, which was established in part by the abolitionist Hunt family to be a boycott against cotton created by slave labor.  You can read a letter from management to workers during a 1925 strike, and you can read the extracts of an interesting case, Waterloo Manufacturing vs. Shanahan, testing 19th century oversight and corruption of state officials.

Digital Humanities Advancement Grants

This joint effort of IMLS and the NEH supports "innovative, experimental, and computationally challenging digital projects at different stages of their lifecycles, from early start-up phases through implementation and sustainability." Due by June 15, these may be offered again in about 6 months.

Apply to Join the MANY Board

The Museum Association of New York is seeking applicants for their Board of Directors. Bruce Whitmarsh of the Chemung County Historical Society is the Board Vice-President (and does a great job!), but I don't see Allegany, Broome, Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Schuyler, Seneca, Tioga, Tompkins, or Yates counties represented, so consider throwing in your hat! Partners in History Video

The New York State Archives Partnership Trust made a nice 6 minute video about the archives and the importance of maintaining records. Take a peek and consider sharing or imitating.

2023 New York State Student Research Awards

The New York State Archives and Archives Partnership Trust announced the 33rd annual awards for student research. These awards come with a cash prize, so suggest a project for your teenaged volunteers! They could write a paper, submit a historic marker application, create a video, or any other format of original historical research - all of which could be about your collections.

Happening in the Neighborhood

The Museum Study Act

MANY advocated and received $1M in funding for the Museum Study Act in 2023, which will fund a comprehensive study of public and private museums and report their findings and recommendations.

Places to Love in Tompkins County

The History Center in Tompkins County is hosting a special and unique film screening about one of the few gay and lesbian communes in the Back to the Land movement: Lavender Hill in West Danby.

Historic Ithaca is hosting a Walking Tour with Jeff Iovannone about LGBTQ+ Publishing.

Stewart Park has officially been added to the State Register of Historic Places thanks to the work of Friends of Stewart Park, Wharton Studio Museum, and Historic Ithaca.

M. C. Escher at Fenimore

Fenimore Art Museum has just opened a new, phenomenal-looking exhibit of M. C. Escher's works, and they've planned a series of great supporting events, like printmaking classes and a free virtual symposium about Escher's influences on the curriculum.

Viral Glenn Curtiss in Steuben

Kirk and the team at Steuben County Historical Society have always had a strong presence on Facebook; they reliably post interesting material with good context provided just about every single day. It's impressive! But even more impressive is how many views their recent post about Glenn Curtiss's 145th birthday got-- over 1,200 shares and a million views! Remember moments like this as you work on your social media strategy; it can pay off in unexpected ways.

The Great Car Thing in Chemung County

Chemung County Historical Society's Great Car Thing is happening this weekend: June 10th from 6 to 8 pm. They'll show off a 1928 Franklin Airman Series 12B and there's a raffle for $10,000!
