Bee in the Know! Here's the latest Buzz from the Delaware Beaches

Zippy skippy - August is zooming by! Say goodbye to summer with the Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral, Labor Day, Sep 5, on the Bethany Beach boardwalk. Or bring a musical instrument of any kind and join with other revelers on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk also on Labor Day, Sep 5, to Pipe Out down the Boardwalk from the Henlopen Hotel to the Bandstand. The RB Historical Society will provide kazoos for people without their own instruments.

Piping Out originated in the mid- to late-1950s by the late bandleader and trombonist Sammy Ferro whose orchestra played for dances held at the old Henlopen Hotel. At the last dance of the summer on Labor Day, Ferro would take his band “to the boards” followed by his audience, and then lead a spontaneous musical parade down the Boardwalk to the vicinity of Rehoboth Avenue.

Let's start with a restaurant roundup, shall we? Red, White & Basil is now open on the highway near Jungle Jim's. Highly recommend that you leave room for dessert (get the Tiramisu)!

Just steps away, in front of the Fractured Prune, is the Guanacos Melting Pot, serving El Salvadorian food seven days a week. Read more here

Drift opened just last week on Baltimore Avenue. Check out the great remodel of the former Seafood Shack in the Cape Gazette photos. The cocktail list looks amazing. This is the first project for the Second Block Hospitality Group, which will now turn their attention to the Square One Martini Bar space. Can't wait to see what they do next!

Practically across the street from Drift is Addictive Tacos, specializing in Baja style, locally sourced fish and shrimp tacos.

Brimming Horn Meadery will open a second location in Seaford this fall. Dolle's is building a new location on Route 1 in Milton.

The Rehoboth Foodie reports that the Route 24 location of Dos Locos will change their name to JJ's Bar & Grill and expand their food offerings to include Indian and Italian as well. Also, the Crab Connect is now open in Lewes. And the biggest news, the Jacona brothers, owners of Zogg's, the Wheelhouse, Bushels Crab House and the Sea Hogg Truck, will be taking over the Nicola's spot on Rehoboth Avenue.

As mentioned in the last issue, Bethany Blues will open Downtown Blues in the original Nicola Pizza location on First Street.

And we now have genuine Italian gelato at Tasty on the Boardwalk (Rehoboth). Check out their full menu here.

Did you know that Theo's (on Baltimore Avenue) has a Doggie Menu with dishes like Lady & the Tramp (pasta, ground beef, green bean, cheddar)? Love that.

The Nifty Pickle (not food!) has expanded shopping options for vinyl lovers with a new store in Peddlers Village. The store offers vintage records, antique items, paintings and jewelry. Love the name!

Charm City Run has opened a Rehoboth Beach location next to Dos Locos. They sell running shoes as well as related nutrition, accessories, hydration and apparel.

Get your ducks in a row! Milton’s Bargains on the Broadkill and the Great Duck Race will takes place Aug 27, on the riverfront in downtown Milton.

Also on Aug 27 is Starwars Fest at Hudson Fields. This free event will feature live music, craft beer, wine, a fleet of food trucks, local artists and vendors, Star Wars-themed games for families, and a costume contest for all. Make sure to try the Jedi Juice IPA by Revelation Brewery. May the force be with you!

Also at Hudson Fields is the 44th Annual Nanticoke Indian PowWow on Sep 10-11.

SUNFESTIVAL (originally known as SUNDANCE) returns Labor Day weekend, featuring comedian Judy Gold, a silent and a live auction, and TWO dance events, the Disco Twilight Tea, followed by SUNDANCE.

The Mispillion Performance Series will present Marcolivia: Marc Ramirez and Olivia Hajioff, violin and violin/viola duo, on Sep 10 at the First Presbyterian Church in Milford. The event is free.

The Delaware Womenade 5th Annual Games Day is Sep 19 at the Ocean View VFW Post 7234. Game tables for four to play any game of your choice. Enjoy a continental breakfast, lunch with bubbly, dessert, cash bar, basket raffle, 50/50 and silent auction. All proceeds benefiting the Peoples Place domestic violence victims and survivors in Sussex and Kent Counties. Contact delawarewomenade@gmail.com

Saltwater Roots boutique has opened in Tanger Midway, er, um, Surfside.

When the Weis supermarket closed in Rehoboth, rumors immediately started that it would become Trader Joe's. I haven't found anything that indicates that might be true, but you can request one for Rehoboth Beach by going here. We thank you for your support. :)

For years I have taken the most incredible classes through the Rehoboth Beach Writers Guild, and am in the process of finishing a novel. I'm now learning the business side of becoming an author (query letters, agents, publishers and more). If that interests you, please feel free to join me as I venture down that rabbit hole. You can follow my IG page or check out my website. Write on!
