“‘If you can?’” said Jesus, “Everything is possible for one who believes.”
- Mark 9:23-
(Read Mark 9:14-29)
I can’t blame the poor dad. He brought his possessed son to the disciples, but they were no help. The father took care of his tortured son for so many years and now was his opportunity to get outside help, but they were not able and he had to be devastated. That’s when Jesus showed up.
Jesus asked the father about his son, and the father told him how bad it really was. Jesus asked questions and the father answered. But he didn’t stop talking. The desperate dad asks Jesus for help. … “But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”
The father added a safety to his request. “If you can…” We like safe questions too, don’t we? They provide a ‘safety net for our hearts in case our Lord doesn’t answer in our timing, or when He answers in a way we don’t like. But Jesus is Lord and needs no protective language, so He throws the question right back at the father with an empowering statement. “‘If you can?’” said Jesus, “Everything is possible for one who believes.”
God already knows what you want and what you need so you can go to our Lord for help. You can turn to Jesus like the father did who exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!" (v.24)
Maybe today you are struggling with doubt. You might doubt if God can actually do something about your sickness, your disease, and even your sin. Trust in Him, who knows what is best for you eternally, forgives your sins, and reminds you that He rules and reigns over all things including death itself. He might not give you the answer you are looking for, but there is NO DOUBT he can do something about it for His glory. Just ask him and trust that He knows what is best for you. Yes, indeed Jesus is more than your doubts and we can remind each other of that every single day.
See you Sunday as we continue our series - Jesus is MORE. I can’t wait!
PRAYER: Lord, Jesus, you are more than our doubts. We do believe that all things are possible with you. Help us Lord, Help us overcome our unbelief. AMEN
