🍁National Lung Health Alliance👨🏽‍⚕️

NB Lung is proud to announce that we have partnered with The Lung Health Foundation, based out of Ontario, in the formation of the National Lung Health Alliance (NLHA), a ground-breaking coalition of organizations committed to the urgent improvement of lung health across Canada.

On October 17th, members of the NLHA organized a “Hill Day” on Parliament Hill, where the team met with government officials, MPs, and policy and decision-makers to press them on prioritizing long-neglected lung health issues facing Canadians.

The three major concerns of the NLHA are:

-Youth Vaping: There are 750,000 youth vaping daily in Canada. NLHA is advocating for a “smoke-free generation” and a national ban on flavoured vapes.

-COPD: Worsened by increasing air pollution and wildfire smoke, COPD is a major health concern. The Alliance is advocating to prioritize early action and promote awareness of breathing tests for accurate COPD diagnosis, enhancing COPD education, and smoking cessation programs.

-Air Quality: Every year air pollution causes more than 15,000 premature deaths across Canada. The NLHA is calling for a detailed plan to increase access to measures to improve air quality in the home; including filtration units to address wildfire smoke, radon testing and mitigation.

Members of NLHA include: Alberta Lung, BC Lung Foundation, Lung Health Foundation, Lung NSPEI, Lung Sask, NB Lung and Association pulmonaire du Québec and national members Lung Cancer Canada, Asthma Canada and COPD Canada.

This is especially important for New Brunswickers, as our province has some of the highest levels of radon in Canada, and radon gas is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Coming Soon: Radon Monitor Lending Program

As part of Radon Action Month, we’re pleased to announce our upcoming Radon Monitor Lending Program! Launching later this month, the program will provide New Brunswickers with access to digital radon monitors through community partners! These monitors offer continuous screening so that you can see this invisible gas in your home and learn about the importance of long-term radon testing.

This Radon Action Month, we encourage every New Brunswick resident to take steps to protect their home and health. If you have questions about testing your home for radon, contact Leah Hemphill, our Manager of Environmental Health Promotion. You can also learn more about Radon on our website, and purchase a test kit though our online shop.

We’ve got a number of events planned for November, and we’d love to see you there!

-NB Lung on Parade! The NB Lung team will be taking part in both the Santa Claus Parade in Saint John on November 18^th, and the Fredericton Parade on November 25^th! Come join the celebrations and meet our happy little elves riding behind an eco-friendly “sleigh” (a Ford Lightning EV)!

-COVID-19 Test Kit Distribution: We’ve got plenty of COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits available to New Brunsickers. Just drop by our office at 132 Main Street in Fredericton, Monday to Friday, 8:30-4:30 to pick up your kits. No appointment necessary; please wear a mask if you are entering the office, or call us if you have been exposed to COVID-19 and we will deliver the kits to you outside.

-EV Presentations: Alyse Wilton, our Manager of Environmental Health Programs, is travelling to Edmonton, on November 26^th, to speak at the Electric Mobility Canada EVVE Conference about the many achievements of NB Lung’s Drive Electric Atlantic Program! Alyse is also presenting at the NB Auto Dealers Association AGM on November 24^th.
