October 2023 Newsletter

Hello All,

Fall Activities

Spring and fall are always the busiest seasons for us. The weather’s pretty much perfect, especially in Iowa where parts of winter can be brutal and parts of summer can be brutal. Unless you’re an endurance rider - where pain is part of the endurance experience - perfect weather is when people really want to be out with their horses, so we usually have a lot of courses scheduled in the Spring and Fall, and a lot of the Horse Expos are in the Spring and Fall. And now that I think of it, it’s while on horseback that a lot of the springing and falling takes place. But I’m getting off topic.

I should probably wait to put this in November's newsletter,

but it’s my favorite fall photo of our pond so I’ll share it now.

I just got back from doing a live-streaming Weekend Seminar for Callie King’s HorseClass at Honeybrook Farm in PA.

Bladder Meridian Technique - processing....processing...

A little "yawn" time.

Everyone needs time to "process"! Anyone yawning?

Being in the doghouse ain't so bad!!

It’s the first time we’ve done anything that big live-streaming and it went really well. Callie has an amazing facility and a very professional video crew. The feedback from people viewing at home and the participaints (oops… spelling error. This is a participaint…)

So, where were we? Oh yeah… HorseClass. We had 11 participants on the course, and an audience of 80 or so watching and asking questions on the live stream via zoom. The responses from the participants, the audience and the horses were great.

“Before” and “After” responses from the course participants here, with more “in between” responses farther down.

Before...

...and After!

The event was recorded, and by the November Newsletter it should be available to people who weren’t part of the live stream audience. If that’s you, tune in next month.

Mark and Jim Plus Dianne Show

I’m driving out to Arroyo Grande, California at the end of the week (yes, I know it’s a long commute) for another collaborative clinic with Mark Rashid, MMCP Dianne Adel (Structural Balancing sessions for riders) and me. Normally the Mark and Jim Show, this is the Mark and Dianne and Jim Show, with added value of seeing changes in the horse and rider after equine and human bodywork. Spots for horse/rider participants are full. There may still be room for auditors but not sure on that one. For more info,

go here: Considering the Horse: Mind and Body

Mark, Dianne, and Jim

If it’s full, then you missed a really good clinic! We’ll be back to Arroyo Grande next Fall, and we’ll be doing the Mark and Jim Show, along with Dr. Stephen Peters’ Your Horse’s Brain Clinic at Happy Dog Ranch in Littleton, CO next July. You’ll see dates for this on the Course Calendar on our website soon. Stay tuned!

Jim, Steve and Mark

Equine Affaire MA

Also coming up, I’ll be at the Equine Affaire in Springfield, MA November 9-12. I’ll be doing demos on Friday and Saturday but will be at our booth all weekend. It’s getting lonely out here in Iowa so be sure to stop by and visit!

Firsts!

We have some interesting Firsts to announce this month:

  • First time podcast interview with Josh and Victoria of My Horse Journey
  • First Masterson Method Demo given in Mexico
  • First Masterson Method Weekend Seminar hosted at a Community College for Native American students in North Dakota
  • First Masterson Method Weekend Seminar in Spain
  • First Masterson Method Activity Day for the blind, hosted by the Deer Creek Lake Lion’s Club
  • First Masterson Method Equine Specialist Seminar for Equine Assisted Services in the UK in New Forest, Feb. 10 – 12, 2024 (although we’re cheating a little here as this isn’t the first announcement for this course : )

Natalie will share photos and inspiring stories behind these events below. Also, if you’re out west we have another Masterson Method Weekend Seminar in Kalispell, MT on November 4 – 5. Yahoo! (Sorry, nobody says that anymore. Couldn’t help myself.)

And finally,

Patrick King and Jim Masterson Podcast Stand-off

I was chatting on the phone this week with Daniel Dauphin of Dauphin Horsemanship, the Adult Onset Horsemanship podcast series, and The Bit Video: Understanding How and Why Bits Function, all of which I recommend. Daniel and I met at the Best Horse Practices Summit in Lexington year before last, and I have a podcast with him in his series.

Well, while on the phone with him he mentioned that his interview with me was at the top of his list of most-listened to podcasts, which made my head swell a little. Then he said that his interview with Patrick King was a close second and that I was coming close to being “de-throned”. After my head shrunk back down to normal – maybe even a little farther down – I thought, “I’m gonna get that guy.”

So, I’m mounting a campaign to open the gap between that Patrick King guy (who I also recommend BTW) and me by asking all of you, and your friends and relatives, to listen to my podcast with Daniel (and NOT Patrick’s) and get the numbers back up so I can show that Patrick King guy (who once bought me a beer BTW) just who’s the Dauphin Podcast King. I mean Leader.

For some reason I can’t seem to find the link to Patrick’s interview, but here’s the link to mine, which was undoubtedly much more fun than Patrick’s:

Ep. 23 Jim Masterson, The Masterson Method

Let me know if you enjoyed it, and I’ll let you know how the Mark, Dianne and Jim Show in California went in next month’s newsletter.

Until then,

Like me, enjoy your horses!

About the Masterson Method Equine Specialist Program

The Masterson Method Equine Specialist specializes in sharing specific light touch Masterson Method techniques with persons served in equine-assisted learning and therapy programs. By doing this bodywork on horses, participants deepen their connection with horses while also gaining self-awareness and self-regulation skills; meanwhile, therapy horses are tended to through simple bodywork and learn a new way of relating to people. It's a win/win!

Masterson Activity Day

We celebrate the First Annual Deep Creek Lake Lion’s Club Blind Camper Masterson Activity Day - now that's a mouthful! Thanks to Mary Kay Burkhart, MMCP and MMES, for helping making this Dream of a Day come true.

As we hoped, the “1st Annual” Deep Creek Lake Lion’s Club Blind Camper Masterson Activity Day was an absolute rousing and inspiring success! The group included four visually impaired youngsters, their local high school volunteer coaches, and their parents and siblings.

After a long week of tent-site camping and lake activities, it was a timely and peaceful day for them. My amazing team of assistants included several retired teachers and former horse enthusiasts, who spent an evening prior to the event learning the Bladder Meridian and rehearsing our strategy for an MMES style production. I was as amazed with their skillful, empathic performance and perseverance throughout the 4 hour visit, as I was with how little explanation the Camper’s, siblings and parents needed before eagerly participating with incredibly sensitive, perceptive, and joyful means! I couldn’t have been more proud of them, and my horses, who received and connected with everyone so seamlessly and patiently. I was deeply moved, uplifted, and reminded again of the magical, natural, phenomenal healing effects that horses have on and with groups of people.

The group(s) worked side by side, all participants requested multiple turns to practice, and as you will see in the photos their smiles tell it all--they were delighted!! I was told that this was the first activity one of the girls took interest in (her name tag is Nautilie)--her mother was so taken and happy she intends to find a therapeutic horse center near their home.

The Program Directors were likewise pleased and impressed, and expressed their gratitude to all. I was truly honored and grateful to have had the opportunity to host such a lovely group of youngsters, their dedicated family members, and all the wonderful DCL Lion’s volunteers.

Many sincere thanks for your (continued) support and encouragement,

Mary Kay Burkart, MMCP, MMES

Lisa Kirkwood, MMCP

Sheridan, Wyoming

I run an equine business called Balanced Equine Sports and, as the name implies, I work with rider balance and the biomechanics of both horse and rider. The piece I was missing is more balance for the horse, that’s where Masterson Method® bodywork came in.

I have always had a soft approach to working with horses in riding, teaching and training. Masterson Method was a perfect compliment to help me communicate with horses in training and to help them perform, so I started my journey to my MM certification. The bodywork enables a communication pathway in training horses and also helps physical and mental balance. I am so excited that I can offer this amazing method to not only my horses but those of my clients!

Tamara Preatoni, MMCP

Vienna, Austria

Tamara has been spending most of her free time with horses since she was 12 years old, first mainly for pleasure and later in dressage competitions up to M class. Since 2019 she is a certified riding instructor.

In 2017 Tamara decided to take a 2-month-break from her full-time Marketing job and travelled to Australia, where she did volunteer farm work. That’s the first time she came across Jim Masterson, who held a weekend course exactly at the farm she was working on. As fate would have it, there was some flooding in the area preventing a few participants from coming and so she could spontaneously join the course with Jim. It didn’t take the whole weekend to convince her that the Masterson Method® is something special and a fascinating way of communication between a horse and a human. What made her continue to become an MMCP was the softness of this bodywork and the fact, that this method is a way to work WITH the horse, not ON the horse, which can incredibly increase the well-being of and the relationship with a horse.

Tamara lives in the south of Vienna together with her husband and two little daughters.

Allison Jane Buckley, MMCP

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Allison grew up in Hong Kong and Kenya before moving to the UAE in 1996 to work. It was during holidays back to the UK and Derbyshire, when her aunt used to take her out riding, that her love of all things equine really began. With a soft spot for Arabian horses, Allison has had some incredible mentors, both equine and human, throughout her journey in a variety of equestrian disciplines.

A competitive endurance rider for 16 years, Allison was fortunate to work with and compete some incredible horses at CEI 1, 2 and 3* levels in the UAE, Germany, France, UK and Australia. It was during this time that she first came across Jim Masterson and his bodywork methods. Feeling the difference equine bodywork made to the horses she competed, she knew that one day she wanted to learn how to make that difference and improve the movement and well-being of the horses she was around.

Since being broken in to race at 3 years old, Allison’s own Arabian mare had regular equine bodywork. She believes this is what has made the difference throughout her mare’s competitive career and why, now at 25 years old, she still loves work and the occasional competition.

It was by chance that Allison found MMCP Claire Beech to work with her mare and she was amazed at the relaxation and improved mobility from the Masterson Method® sessions. Watching Claire’s every move, Allison knew the this was the thing she had been looking for and certified as a MMCP in 2023.

Based in Dubai and Sharjah, Allison will travel to other Emirates by arrangement.

Sabine Maas, MMCP

Raleigh, North Carolina

Since I was a young girl, I have felt a love for and a connection with horses. Unfortunately, I only got to take one year of riding lessons when I was an early teen and rode occasionally in my later teen years. In my early 20’s, I emigrated to the USA from the Netherlands and entered a long career in healthcare. It was not until my home was an empty nest that I returned to riding, finding the connection with horses an important way of dealing with work stress and burn out, particularly in the COVID years.

Two years after starting to ride again, I bought my first horse. Green on green but with a good trainer on board, we were going to be okay. Joyfully and ravenously, I learned as much as I could in terms of anything horse related. Now, no longer green, the desire to learn more and understand more has not lessened. It was in the Fall of 2021 that I first became exposed to the Masterson Method® of Integrated Bodywork. It has made a huge difference in the wellbeing and performance of my horse, and seeing what impact this method has on a horse, I went from being intrigued to being completely convinced of the difference it can make. I signed up for the 2-day “Beyond Horse Massage” weekend in March 2022, followed by the “Advanced 5-day Course” in May of 2022, and completed my Certification as MMCP August 5-7, 2023.
