Public Meeting Recap: Haynes Generating Station Infrastructure Project
On Wednesday, January 29, 2025 a well-attended public meeting was held at Edison Park to discuss the proposed Haynes Generating Station Recycled Water and Sewer Force Main Project. As this is not a Seal Beach project, representatives from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and the Long Beach Utilities Department outlined plans to install a water and sewer line to serve the Haynes Generating Station. These facilities travel through much of Long Beach, but it’s also proposed to cut through a portion of the College Park West neighborhood.
The meeting provided residents with information on how the proposed project could impact Seal Beach, offering a better understanding of their potential effects on the community. It also allowed attendees to ask questions and voice concerns, ensuring that the community’s feedback is considered as the project moves forward.

Gum Grove Park Clearing
As part of the City’s fuel modification efforts, the City’s contractor worked diligently to remove fallen logs, limbs, and other debris, improving the Gum Grove Park’s safety.
In addition to clearing debris, the team focused on removing suckers from the bases of trees, as well as cutting down dead trees and dead limbs to promote the overall health of the park’s ecosystem. This necessary work was carried out with care, ensuring minimal disruption to the natural surroundings. This vital maintenance ensures that Gum Grove Park is diligently maintained all visitors and residents alike.
Finally, an ecologist from Tidal Influence oversaw the project to monitor any bird activity and nesting within the park. Their presence ensured that the cleanup did not disturb local wildlife and that all activities were carried out responsibly and in compliance with local and relevant ordinances.

Tree Planting Around the City
Our staff is planting new trees in vacant tree planting locations, working to improve upon our urban forestry. This effort is part of the City of Seal Beach’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, improving air quality, and promoting the overall well-being of our community.
By planting these new trees, we not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of our City but also contribute to a healthier, more vibrant environment for all to enjoy.
As part of replenishing our urban forest, staff has recently planted a strawberry tree and a palm tree, replacing one that fell over during a recent storm.

Routine Meter Change-Out in Old Town
As part of our ongoing efforts to maintain accurate readings and improve service, staff recently completed a change-out of an old meter within the Old Town District. This specific meter had become difficult to read due to age, fogging, and scratches on the lenses, which made it challenging to get clear, accurate readings.
The new meter will ensure we can continue providing efficient and accurate service. The meter change out is considered routine and is a common staple of our Utilities Division initiative for maintaining an up-to-date system.

Lifeguard Activities 1/25/25 - 2/11/2025
- This week’s rescues have primarily taken place near the San Gabriel River. On an outgoing tide, surfers have been caught in the tidal flow. This current can be so strong that it has pulled surfers past the end of the pier. Three surfers, unable to make it back to shore, were rescued on separate days.
- Marine Safety took delivery of two new Rescue Watercrafts (RWC). These watercrafts are being equipped with rescue sleds and safety straps for operations in the surf. Our operators are currently training on the new equipment, and we are excited to have them in service.
- Marine Safety Officer Jeremy Jenks is training at the Maritime Institute to obtain his United States Coast Guard Captain's License. This certification provides rescue boat operators with training in maritime law, towing operations, and compliance.
