Lord Of Life Lutheran Church
"Where everybody is somebody, and Jesus is Lord!"

Season Of
Pentecost

Issue Of: August 1, 2023

"You are the Lord, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you."
Nehemiah 9:6 NRSV

Coffee Hour Fellowship
Every Sunday

Join us for Coffee Hour every Sunday following the 9:30 AM service. Be with us in Fellowship Hall to socialize, catch up with church friends, enjoy some treats, and, of course, sip our "heavenly" coffee!
From The Pastor's Desk:

"Almost Heaven... West Virginia." One of the world's favorite karaoke songs, it's one that most folks can heartily sing along with. And our family has chosen West Virginia as our annual vacation spot - a place called Canaan Valley. Though it's pronounced kah-NANE rather than KAY-nann, it's still the name of the Promised Land that God's people sought when they came out of slavery in Egypt.

What is it about a place that makes it "almost Heaven"? Sometimes it's a place where we can truly relax, knowing nature and community will provide what we need. Or maybe it's the sense that there's something new around that bend in the road, something surprising in its goodness? Perhaps it's a sense that we can belong, even if we're not from there. Think of how you feel in the first moments that song starts up - it's like a foretaste of Heaven. You know there's about to be togetherness, joy, and the kind of goodness that none of us can create on our own.

In worship, we continue to read the Gospel of Matthew, chapters 12-14. We've heard many parables that tell what the Kingdom of Heaven is like (in the modern day, it might be "the kingdom is like a family going on vacation, searching for the perfect road trip song"!) and now we hear of Jesus' different actions - living parables as Jesus feeds the 5,000, walks on water, and heals the sick.

We don't have to go to West Virginia to find the kingdom of Heaven - those parables are in your daily living and your special times away. Where you are, look and listen for how God is drawing you closer to the love of Jesus - beyond "almost" and into true Heaven.
Peace,
Pastor Wendolyn
Pastor Wants To Know You Better!

Before and after church services, I try to say hello to every congregation member who was present, but it is usually not the kind of conversation that we can get to know each other better. Now through August 11th is a prime time for getting together for some quality time. I would love to stop by your home for a brief visit and just talk. We could tour your backyard, sit on the porch, or even take a walk in your neighborhood. I look forward to learning more about your hobbies, interests, and family. Some folks have said, "Oh Pastor, I don't want to 'put you out' by taking your time!" But, to me it would be something I hope to experience. Please extend an invitation to me to visit with you. It could be at your home or other ways of connecting like meeting at a local park. Our homes and lives had become sealed off during the darker days of Covid, and we can now open up again. Let’s get to know each other better. I’m looking forward to that!

Our second group project is not finalized yet, but we are hoping to do some light work to assist the Friends of Cyrus with yard work outside their building and possibly some light cleaning in their clients' homes. A sign up sheet for each group is in the Narthex.

Mission Accomplished!
Our trip to Brenton, West Virginia was a huge success. We provided ASP with two work groups, which allowed us to help two families. Lee Jennings and Ed Hourihan were the group leaders.
Lee’s team included Tina and Bill Leach, Char Jennings and Valery Danzey (from Prince of Peace). Ed’s team included Lu Hourihan, Penny Miller, Lynn Walsh (sister), and Dave Jones.
Lee and his team had to replace a deck. The homeowner had mobility issues and was not comfortable, nor was it safe for her to walk on this deck. They began the first couple days with demolition and clean up of the site. Although it meant working in the sun each day, it did not keep them from accomplishing their task. Upon completion on day 5, the homeowner was thrilled to finally be able to walk on her deck. The team bought her a new plant, and she was given a quilt made by Lord of Life quilters.
Ed’s team was asked to finish a bathroom for the three generations that lived in the home. It began with sanding and painting. The humidity of West Virginia prevented the paint from drying quickly. While we waited, we took on another task of pulling down old ceiling tiles in Colton’s room (a 10 year old). It was water stained and would be replaced with sheet rock. Our work was interrupted one morning when the grandmother’s Pomeranian dog died. We were asked to get a container so they could bury the dog. As the ceiling came down, a new bathroom floor was laid. The vanity went in next and then the toilet. Installing the sheet rock was a challenge as we only had a ladder and a step stool. It took the five of us to get it up. On day 5, the last coat of paint went on the ceiling and the water was turned on. Success! No leaks! Before leaving, we gave the family quilts. They were very happy with all we had done. It was an emotional good-bye for us all.
Thank you Lord of Life for your support that allowed us to go the “hollers of Appalachia” and provide help to these wonderful people.

Monday Message, July 10th
Below is a link to the original version of "Take Me Out To The Ball Game."

(Hearing this song) got me thinking about the similarities between our faith and baseball. Did a little research. Below are some points I found from various resources. Enjoy.
 - Don’t let the crowd shake your confidence. Keep your eye on the ball. And as Jesus did on Good Friday, stay the course.
- We do not play alone. In baseball and in life, we are always surrounded by our team. “For he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you’” (Hebrews 13:5.).
- Baseball is a game of managed failure for every player. This seven-month exercise in hopeful, managed failure is a faint echo of the glorious promise James offers to all who have put their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ: “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness” (James 1:2-3.).
- In baseball, “Grace bats cleanup.” The cleanup batter is always the fourth one in the lineup. The aim is to get the first three batters on base, then with the bases loaded, the strongest hitter steps up to bring them all home. Grace is the love of God shown to the unlovely, the peace of God given to the restless, the unmerited favor of God. Faith is a gift through grace. God's grace is undeserved favor. Grace cannot be earned; it is something that is freely given. We count on God's grace and the bridge he built in our relationship with him. It's our grand slam home run.

"Stepping-stones To Health"
At Lord Of Life:
Strong Bones And Balance Fitness Program
Tuesday, August 22nd
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
In April, a few members of Lord of Life began to ask, “How might we be better stewards of our health?” Thus, the steering committee consisting of Ed and Lu Hourihan, Janell Reich, Penny Miller, Pastor Wendolyn, Barbara Ma, and Cynthia Tait began to plan for an exciting new emphasis on health at LoL. The group had fun creating the new title for the ministry, “Stepping-stones To Health,” at our May meeting. The title embodies the reality that change happens one step at a time and that God provides the solid foundation for this change. It also works on and through the knowledge that God wants us to care for our bodies. One more point for the grammar police out there. Instead of “Steppingstones” we use the hyphen in the title to indicate that we are not in this alone, as God is with each of us. Also, we are there for one another as we pursue better health.
In June, the committee crafted a vision that springs forth from our congregation’s larger mission: We are a welcoming community that encourages each other toward holistic health, offering stepping-stones to feel and live better! This vision stretches beyond the boundaries of our church membership so that anyone in the community can join us to pursue better health and wellness.
Please join us at our next program offering, Strong Bones and Balance Fitness, which will meet on Tuesday, August 22nd from 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM in Fellowship Hall. This video class is open to all ages, with exercises that can be adjusted for nearly any ability level. Come as you are in comfortable clothes. If you have questions, please get in touch with Cynthia Tait by email carussell1@comcast.net or phone 602-708-6997.
Do You Want To Tour?
Recently, an email was sent out to all that asked if church members would be interested in attending tours of two music oriented venues. Rick Krause, our Music Ministry leader suggested the sites of the Schulmerich Handbell factory in Hatfield, PA and the Boardwalk Hall organ in Atlantic City. Below is information about the tours they offer. If you have an interest in attending a tour of either location, please let Janell Reich or Rick Krause know.

Schulmerich Bells, LLC, Hatfield, PA
- This is the factory that builds and repairs our handbells
- It is about a 1-1/2 hour drive from LOL
- Price is $15 per person and must be scheduled in advance
- Times are Monday-Friday at either 10:00 AM or 2:00 PM
- The number of attendees is capped at around 10 people – that number can flex a little bit, but if there are too many people it becomes difficult to make sure that everyone can see and hear everything on the tour

Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, NJ
-Free Daily Recital & Tour (1/2 hour recital and 1/2 hour tour)
-Monday-Friday at 12:00 noon
-Available May - October
-About a 1 hour drive
-The parking garage is located at the end of Mississippi Avenue and the Boardwalk. Just take the ramp down into the tunnel underneath Boardwalk Hall and make the first right. Rates vary depending on the event. The garage is CASH ONLY!

Batting is on the way to finish the quilts - there is still time to sew tops and have them ready for the blessing of the quilts on September 10th. We are receiving sheets for backings, so we should be able to put together lots of quilts for this service.

Helping Hands Ministry
Wednesday, August 30th,
At 9:30 AM
(For The Christian Caring Center)
Helping Hands is a monthly ministry to make sandwiches for the homeless served by Christian Caring Center. It meets the last Wednesday of each month. We form an assembly line and make about 200 sandwiches in an hour. Jobs are easy – putting meat and cheese on a roll, placing sandwiches in a baggie, counting the sandwiches, and putting them in a grocery bag. Everyone gets a small, easy task and a lot gets done quickly while we share some time together. We keep everyone safe by wearing gloves and masks, spacing ourselves, and venting the room. All are invited to join us! If you have any questions, please contact Janell Reich.

MORE stands for Modular Organic Regenerative Environments. The group is 100% funded by recycling athletic shoes, keeping them out of landfills. Donated shoes are sold to participating vendors in developing countries. Proceeds regenerate forests and jump start small farming co-ops in needy regions. This creates retail jobs while stimulating free enterprise. MORE provides basic supplies, tools, seeds (fruit-bearing mango, papaya, avocado and income producing mahogany), and agroforestry training to poor farming families, school children and rural villages.

LifeLines Ending Song:
Our ending song, was one of the songs sung by the Vacation Bible School children during the closing exercises. Besides singing, VBS children accompanied our adult musicians with drums, chimes, and other instruments. The song ELW #866, We Are Marching In The Light, is one that we have used in our worship services. This version is sung by members of the University Presbyterian Church in Austin, TX.
