We Have Begun Delivering Supplies to Eastern Kentucky

On Monday morning we made our first delivery of supplies to people in the flooded areas of Eastern Kentucky. Thank you to everyone who made this mission possible! While there, we learned that camping stoves and solar-powered camping showers are also urgently needed; we’ve added them to our list.

We need:
  • Large cases of bottled water (packs of 24 or more)
  • Large packs of diapers (various sizes)
  • Large packets of baby wipes
  • Camping stoves
  • Solar-powered camping showers

We also encourage you to assemble supply buckets and drop them off. Pack the supplies in the buckets and seal them in with the lid. Please include these cleanup supplies:

  • 5-gallon bucket with resealable lid
  • 5 scouring pads
  • 7 sponges, assorted sizes
  • 1 scrub brush
  • 5 dust masks
  • 50 clothespins
  • Clothesline, two 50 ft. or one 100 ft.
  • 1 box dry laundry detergent, 50–78 oz.
  • 1 pair work gloves
  • 2 pair latex gloves (like Playtex)
  • 1 plastic bottle concentrated household liquid cleaner (like Lysol), 12 oz.
  • 1 plastic bottle liquid disinfectant dish soap (like Dawn), 25 oz.
  • 1 pkg. cleaning towels (18 reusable, like Easy Wipes)
  • 24-count roll heavy-duty trash bags (33–45 gallon)

We will make more trips to affected areas, so please continue to bring your donations to the church. Ring the office, and we will show you where to drop them off. If you have questions or want to help collect, move, and deliver these supplies, please call Justin Miller at 423-764-7176 or email him.

If you would like to donate money, please write a check to FPC Bristol and designate “Minister’s Discretionary Fund – Flood” in the memo. You can also give online. All proceeds will go to buy supplies and provide financial assistance to those affected.

Five Cents a Meal Offering Sunday

We will collect our quarterly Five Cents a Meal offering this Sunday, August 14, at both services and online. To give this offering remotely, go to our website, fpcbristol.org, and click on GIVE in the top right corner of our homepage. On the new page, click on the arrow on the Fund line, then scroll down and click on Five Cents a Meal. The suggested offering is $13.65 per person, or about a nickel for each meal in a three-month period. Feel free to round up! The monies we collect will go to Holston Presbytery Hunger Ministries.

Please be generous in these difficult times. According to the minutes of the March Presbytery meeting, 35 local and international Hunger Grant applications (for $2,000 each) requested a total of $70,000 in 2021. Yet in that same year, only $32,025.41 was received in Five Cents a Meal contributions. Therefore, all 2021 Hunger Grant requests were funded at only 45.75 percent. This shortfall emphasizes the ongoing need for more support of this ministry.
Three Weeks of Free Fellowship Suppers!
We will resume Wednesday night programming August 17 with supper in the fellowship hall at 5:30, followed by activities for children, teens, and adults. For the Adult Enrichment program, the Brazil Mission Team will report on their work in Natal in June. There will be no cost for supper on August 17, 24, and 31, thanks to a benefactor who has underwritten the cost to encourage people to come see what Wednesday nights are all about. We look forward to seeing you!
Life Together for Home Groups
Our latest Home Group curriculum, Life Together, is about how we can be new persons and communities centered in the person and work of Jesus Christ. You can access the curriculum on our website. You can also watch for it to drop on our Home Groups Facebook site.
Give Safely
We encourage you to use text, mail, or our website to safely continue your faithful support of our ministries during the pandemic. You can give online by going to our website and clicking on “Give” in the upper right corner. You can send your pledge, offering, or special gift by texting fpcbristol to 73256, or mail your checks directly to the church.
Join the Sanctuary Choir
If you hear a call to be more involved in worship, join the Sanctuary Choir! We do our best to lead the congregation in worship, and we always need more voices of all types to lift up a song. Our rehearsals for fall began August 10, but you can join us at any time. Please consider participating in choir practice from 7:15 to 8:45 on Wednesday evenings and singing with us at 10:15 on Sunday mornings.

Children’s Music Performance Schedule
Melissa Galliher, Children’s Music Minister, has announced the children’s performance schedule for the fall semester. Children’s Bells will perform Sunday, August 28. Our new Jubilation Youth Choir (3rd8th graders) will begin practicing Wednesday, August 31, 7:157:45 p.m., for a four-week commitment. They will then sing on Sunday, September 25.
Christian Hands Ministry
Needs Cleaners
FPC’s Christian Hands Ministry assists people in our community with housing needs and repairs. We are about to finish a project and are looking for volunteers to clean the interior of the house when we’re done. We will provide the cleaning supplies. If you can help, please tap Justin Miller on the shoulder or email him.

New Adult Study Begins Next Sunday
Next Sunday, August 21, the Reverend Dr. Bud Branscomb will begin teaching an inductive Bible study on the Gospel of John. The class will meet for eight to ten weeks in room 167, across from the Boy Scout Hall. Bud has a wealth of teaching and pastoral experience from having served ministries in Kingsport, Hawkins County, and Greene County. With his wife Marg, who also worships with us, Bud cofounded Alpha/Omega Ministries, which works with 15 Tri-Cities congregations. Since retiring as the CFO of the Appalachian Educational Communication Corp. (a group of six Christian radio stations), Bud has shared his pastoral gifts with several local churches. He is now the Executive Director of CrossBridge Ministries, which prepares persons to serve as tomorrow’s church leaders. There he teaches with Dr. Charles Stoner.

These are our current Sunday morning adult classes and Bible studies:
  • Reflection Class (Dave Welch), Room 167
  • Young Professionals, College Classroom
  • Line by line, verse by verse Gospel study, Room 123

Recreation and Re-Creation at Doe River Gorge

Our annual Doe River Gorge outing was a beautiful afternoon of fun and fellowship. We began with worship by the lake and celebrated the baptism of Ivan Fielitz. Then Kat Borsch, Victoria Keith, and Lilly and Primrose Rollins rededicated their lives in Christ through a remembrance of their baptism, professing their faith together with their church family. The rest of the afternoon was spent in socializing, relaxing, climbing on lake obstacle courses, shooting each other into the air on the blob, ziplining, and breaking bread together. We cannot wait for next year!
