coaches train on Book Creator, Newsela

SFPS' digital learning coaches, funded by the Educational Technology Note (ETN), are receiving training on Book Creator and Newsela, two new tools coming to students this year. Book Creator "helps students become creative problem solvers through the creation of digital books on Chromebooks and other devices" and Newsela is a "news story-based platform that aims to help students improve their literacy skills with real-world content."
"The voter-approved Educational Technology Note (ETN) allows us to sell bonds to purchase and support technology. This year's election will provide for $55 million over five years, without raising taxes. The technology provided by the ETN is not a luxury--it is essential. With classroom support from our digital learning coaches, tools like Newsela and Book Creator make students active participants in their learning," said Superintendent Hilario "Larry" Chavez.
Newsela, a research-based technology tool, offers a library of 15,000 texts to support instruction in English Language Arts, Social Studies and Science. Texts are written at five different reading levels, with Newsela providing comprehension quizzes, writing prompts and vocabulary-building exercises.
A 2017 independent study by Empirical Education of Newsela's effect on reading performance in over 2,500 California schools showed the following:
- "The number of students performing near or above standard was higher in schools actively using Newsela...."
- "Improvement in reading scores was equivalent to 24 extra days of reading instruction."
- "Newsela's positive impact was seen across all subgroups of students."
- "Newsela usage was positively correlated with reading performance."
Book Creator combines text, images, audio and video to create digital books. It allows students to consider the whole writing process as they type or dictate text onto a page, record themselves reading what they have written and check for comprehension as their books are read back to them.
In 2023, independent reviewer LearnPlatform said that Book Creator opens the door to multimodal learning. "Multimodal learning refers to an instructional approach that caters to diverse learning styles and preferences by enabling multimodal expression for students to meet learning objectives in more accessible ways and thus creating a more inclusive learning environment."

Erin Lucio
Capital High School
Erin Lucio, an 11th grade student at Capital High School (CHS), is looking forward to representing CHS and being its voice on student education, community issues and overall success and achievements. Last year, Lucio was among students featured in the Santa Fe New Mexican who were serving as Near Peer Tutors, providing tutoring services at elementary schools, including Nava Elementary School, Nina Otero Community School and Ramirez Thomas.
Erin Lucio, estudiante de 11º grado en Capital High School (CHS), espera representar a CHS y ser su voz en la educación estudiantil, los problemas comunitarios y el éxito y los logros generales. Hanbi Park
Santa Fe High School
Hanbi Park, an 11th grade student at Santa Fe High School (SFHS), said that as a journalist for the Santa Fe New Mexican, he's had the privilege of sharing stories that highlight the diverse voices and experiences within our community. This role has given him insight into the power of representing smaller communities and fostering an understanding at a local level. He wants to take this further by representing SFHS on the school board. Park founded an art association at SFHS that hosts monthly art workshops on campus and teaches various techniques.
Hanbi Park, un estudiante de 11º grado en Santa Fe High School (SFHS), dijo que como periodista del Santa Fe New Mexican, ha tenido el privilegio de compartir historias que resaltan las diversas voces y experiencias dentro de nuestra comunidad. Este rol le ha dado una idea del poder de representar a comunidades más pequeñas y fomentar el entendimiento a nivel local. Quiere ir más allá representando a SFHS en la junta escolar. Lucas Robbins
Mandela International
High School
Lucas Robbins, an 11th grade student at Mandela International Magnet School, said that he has developed a deep connection to Mandela and its students. He wants to be an advocate for the school and bring attention to the issues that matter most to the student body. He has served as president and treasurer (twice) of the student council. As part of the Mandela focus on students being open-minded and compassionate thinkers, he will work to represent the voices of SFPS students as a whole.
Lucas Robbins, un estudiante de 11º grado en Mandela International Magnet School, dijo que ha desarrollado una conexión profunda con Mandela y sus estudiantes. Alternate
Enrique Eigner-Herrera, a 12th grade student at Early College Opportunities High School (ECO), was last year's student board member for Desert Sage Academy, ECO and Mandela International Magnet School. He returns this year as an alternate should one of the student representatives be unable to attend a board meeting. He said he wants to continue making an impact and giving his peers a voice.
Enrique Eigner-Herrera, un estudiante de 12º grado en la Escuela Secundaria Early College Opportunities (ECO), fue miembro de la junta estudiantil el año pasado de Desert Sage Academy, ECO y Mandela International Magnet School. Robert Martinez, SFPS' chief financial officer, and Melissa Blaylock, executive director of grants and special revenue, received "40 Under Forty Awards" from the Santa Fe Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at an awards ceremony in September, placing them in an "elite group of young professionals."
"What an honor to have not one, but two of our leaders receive this prestigious honor," said Superintendent Hilario "Larry" Chavez. "Both Robert and Melissa have strived to ensure financial integrity across the district. We greatly appreciate their service and are very proud of them," he said.
The top business awards "showcase the best of the best in business success, leadership and community involvement in Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico" and celebrate "rising leaders in the community under the age of 40 and the role they play in helping New Mexico thrive."
This is the second year the Santa Fe Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has presented "40 Under Forty Awards." Recipients were nominated for the awards.

The SFPS Transportation Department is looking for school bus drivers. The department consists of more than 70 bus routes, which include regular pick up and drop off of K-12 students, special education students and three- and four-year-old students attending NYE Early Childhood Center. Drivers must be 21 years of age, must be able to obtain and maintain a license (with “P” and “S” endorsements) and adhere to regulatory requirements.
